ENTER YOUR CREATION HERE - MOCpages LINK and Catagory. Add one Photo to the pool for each.

Pilots and service crews, gather around! We at Mechahub are pleased to announce an exciting new contest. The theme for this contest is Civilian Mecha. The only real restrictions are that the mecha possess no weaponry (i.e. not for military application) and the limits of your imagination. There are no technology time frame restraints either so it can range anywhere from Steampunk to Futuristic. The contest will run from March 16th to May 25th.

There are several examples of unarmed mecha in popular science fiction and anime like the exo-loader in the movie Aliens, construction patlabors in Patlabor, and the logger mechs in Battletech. Some ideas to explore are salvage and retrieval, warehouse/dock and spacedock workers, EMS/first responders, communications, sports, and entertainment, tugs, product vendors, etc.

4 Categories are the following:

Land Sea Air Space

The 3 sizes per category are:

Minifig scale with pilot, unmanned minifig scale (i.e. drone), and microscale.

You may enter only one moc per category so please do not rush to post. Please only enter new creations. If you have made a civilian mecha that predates this contest, and has not been posted before then it can be accepted. Placing the mecha in a diorama to showcase its ability would greatly enhance its presentation but is not required. A secret council of shadowy personnel will declare the winners for each size and category.

Submit entries to the Mechahub Civilian Mecha Contest thread on Lugnet.Build.Mecha with one picture link of the moc, directing to your gallery. This contest has been posted on other AFOl forums/websites to give other people a chance to enter. For easier compiling purposes for the judges, just pick one forum to post your entries. Please do not multi-post your entries. For example, DO NOT post your entry to both Flickr and Lugnet.

Steve Witt and the Lego Group have generously provided fantabulous prizes.

Now go forth to your fabrication units and churn baby churn!

P.S.

The Mechahub site is currently down due to hosting issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to rectify things soon.

We also reserve the right to modify the rules at any time if it suits the best interests of the contest.

What are these 'prizes' anyhow? Not that it matters; there's too many excellent builders for someone of rather minor skill like myself to stand much chance of getting to even the lowest level.

Oh, and a few questions: one, is there any rule against adapting existing designs, because I think my Zenith frame is the best mecha-moc I have.

Two, with regards to weapons, would a hardsuit thing intended for a futuristic big-game hunter be fine? It wouldn't actually mount any weapons of its own, rather it would use a handheld hunting rifle.

Frame Tech is permissable adapted for a CMC purpose. I suppose Yes to your second question, since it is technically "Recreation".

Good Luck!

Edit:

Upon review, it has been decided that a Game Hunter Mecha type Mecha is not allowed. This is a gray area we would like to avoid, and feel it is not in the spirit of the contest.

Also, no weapons, which leads to a firm NO by the Administrator. Thank you for understanding. Good Luck! Build on!

I think I'll do the second; I already have a hardsuit in the pipeline and my Zenith is less a frame and more of a 'swap arms, colours and center torso' thing. Besides, that new missile carrier depleted me of mecha-useful parts.

Thanks a lot for the invitation ! I'm not a great Mecha builder at all, but this can be an interesting challenge.

One question: is a Mecha supposed to have only two legs ? I mean, are four-legs Mecha allowed ? Because I think I would be better with a four-legs thing (something like a Zoid - you must know them ;)

Thanks again - it's been a while since I've don't do a contest on MOCpage :)

Mecha Builders, make sure you are posting ONLY NEW CREATIONS - not previously posted to MOCpages. Previously posted Mecha will be disqualified.

I think any mecha design at all is fine, as long as it's either for big-game hunting or weaponless.

So I THINK a quad is fine. If it's not, it should be, anyway.

Yes, it is not particularly good.

Yes, the colours are scattered.

After a moc falls apart several times, I tend to lose all interest in colour schemes.

Hey, its cool, I just had to make sure it was clear that we are encouraging new creations to be built for this contest. I wasn't singling out anyone, more like within minutes of making the group, there was some entries, and it seemed to me two minutes after the announcement, people had creations. So I wanted to be sure people understood we are looking to see new creations.

Good luck everyone! Build On!

Now comes the big question: If I find the time to create my entry for this it would be a mineing mech, but to make it futuristic it would use a huge laser at the front to get threw rocks, would that laser count as weapon?

I was told, that any Mining Mech, better look like one and that it should seem as if it works in a cave with equipment and details that show it's purpose....and not just a Mech with a laser on it, which is against the spirit of the contest. Still your idea makes us think twice about what a Civilian Mech really is, so kudos for your imagination. Just please work with us to represent the spirit of the contest and not just find a way to arm the Mech, even with a tool. Part of the judging will be based on imagination, so it you feel you are skirting the line, then please by all means, try something more peaceful or utilitarian. That would be very cool, thanks for understanding. Good luck! Build On!

Hey Matt!

Please build new creations for this contest.
That construction Mech you just made is perfect.

Your Entry was removed? How? Do you mean in the group photo pool? perhaps it went to the second page? I did not remove anyone's creation.

I will have to clean up photos that have been entered to the pool that are either old MOCs or have weapons. (Everyone) If the MOC you add to the group photos is NOT your CMC Entry, I am going to have to remove it, so the judges can better keep track of the MOCs.

Please only add photos of your CMC entry. In a few days I am going to have to do a clean up.

Thanks again Mech Builders! Good Luck and thanks for understanding! Build on!

P.S. I spoke with Bryce and the Mecha Hub is on it's way back to being healthy. The contest banner should be up soon on the Mecha Hub too.

Actually Matt, if you were working on your MOCpages and deleted then reuploaded a picture (construction Mech) it may have broken the link and the picture may have disapeared.Maybe that is what happened? Please add it again, I want to be sure that you work is respected and represented. Thanks!

I have a question regarding the catagorys. The space catagory does that mean like the mech operates in outer space or any planet without atmosphere or just any planet that's not earth? And should the mech have an enclosed cockpit or just so the pilot has a self sustaining suit?

Hey Cameron, this caused some confusion, but Fradel has his reasons. Try not to take it too literally, basicaly he would like to keep the CMC announcements to one place where ever you feel it is best to announce it.

For example, feel free to post it to Flickr and MOCpages, just make one place as your Announcement location, so it can be included in by the laison's when compiling the entries.

Also, be careful when you make a comment in a group here. Your last post contained language that was flagged by MOCpages and I had to delete it.

Lastly, (specific to your entry) please review the Mecha Hub.com FAQs to best determine if your creation is eligiable. (Fradel is trying to email Bryce to get the information so we can post it here and on the other fan forums.)

Thanks for understanding! Good Luck! Build On!

Hey Matt!

Space Mecha would be a Mech designed to operate in Space. It may have thrusters on the end of the legs instead of feet, or maybe it is a cargo loader in Zero G.

As for the open/closed canopy, that is up to you and how realistic you want to make it.

Good Luck! Build On!

Heyyyyy! Cameron!

Listen, we had a meeting concerning your (mostly Bionicle) Mech entry. Here is the deal:

After a discussion with Mecha Hub Founder Bryce McGlone, we do not wish to draw a line in the sand so to speak, for what is Mecha and what is not Mecha. It is better to allow people to enter and let the judges decide.

This way, no one feels left out. While you have a 98% pre-made Bionicle joint creation, it is up to you to build what you want, and let the judges decide.

From what I was told, "The more the merrier", also back in the day when discussions were held to decide what is a mecha, Bryce sought out well known and respected Bionicle builders to help decide what the difference is.

The criteria set up by Bryce and the people he asked to help determine the differences, were for the Mecha Hub itself.

While I have always said, Bionicle is just TECHNIC with a story line, one of the deciding factors is the use of masks, and pre-made limbs.

So in the words of Fradel, "Boost your system ratio", this way you are sure to catch the eye of the judges in building Mecha, not just Bionicle Mechs.

The final thought given to me was, WHO CARES!
So in that spirit, PLEASE re-enter your creation. You are more than welcome to enter the Searcher in to the CMC! DO IT NOW!

THANKS! Good Luck!

I've now built an entry, and it's a racing mech that will be posted soon. I'm just curious-- Is it okay that it uses a stand for photography purposes? The leg design I've come up with looks very good, but is extremely fragile and needs support for posing. It CAN stand on it's own, but then has very limited poseability.
