2WC 3: Design a Lego Set
Join to comment
 Group admin
Welcome to the Third Two Week Challenge! This time, the theme is Design a Lego Set. Now this is a combination of two themes from our idea section; Existing Theme and Retired Theme. This is not quite the usual contest theme. Most take old sets and redesign them, or mash two themes together or make an alternative model, not this time. You have to build your own Lego Set of an existing or retired theme of Lego's long list of themes. Need help of finding a theme? Check this out:
http://brickset.com/browse/?list
or perhaps even this:
http://www.bricklink.com/browseTree.asp?itemType=S
It doesn't seem that hard right? Just make a set for one of Lego's many themes. Well there's a catch. It has to look and function like an actual Lego Set. That means, be purist, and no illegal connections. Lego rules apply this time. You don't need to make box art or instructions though (More power to you if you do.), you just need to make the set.

Rules and Restrictions:

-New Creations Only
-One Creation Per Person
-No sharing with other contests
-You must post a link within this topic to your entry
-Your entry must be done by the end of Friday, February 22nd, 2013 MOCpages Time.
-The build must be purist(Stickers may be an exception if they are needed.)
-The build must follow all of Lego's Construction Rules, no illegal connections.
-Must look and function like an actual Lego Set.
-The build must fall under one of Lego's existing or retired themes.
-No theme-mashing
-No size, part number, figure number, or theme restrictions as long as they comply with all other rules.
-You may use colors after 2004 for themes before 2004, but parts should follow the timeline as close as possible.
-The same goes for parts. You may use any parts you like, but try and keep them as close to timeline accurate as possible. (This means no cheese slopes for classic space! I know, it's heart-breaking, but you can't deny the logicity of it.)

Judging:

Total Points: 25

Theme: 5
What theme did you choose? Exsisting or Retired? Liscenced or Original? Etc.

Build: 10
Does it follow the rules? Does it look like an actual Lego Set? Does it look good? Building Techniques?

Originality/Creativity: 10
Does it look similar enough to fit the theme, but not just be a reboot. (This does not apply to any Star Wars or City themed entries. These have had redone models. It's not suggested, but is allowed.) How original is the set? Does it have any cool functions? Etc.

So I believe this is all. Given the two week time period, I would suggest you make a set that is similar to a 20-30 dollar price ranged set. These seem to have the most playability because they are the most accessable to obtain. Larger sets still have a lit of functions though, just look at the Aqua Raiders 7775 Aquabase Invasion Set. It's got quite a few functions.

Have fun building, and don't forget that deadline is the 22nd! We've been doing pretty well with participants lately, let's keep it up!

I must say MCLegoboy, you have been doing an excellent job getting this group back together and active with participants. I'm am always excited about what the next contest is. The 2 week deadline is excellent as well.

This contest is also quite awesome! I hope to enter as I have on the last two! (Btw, I got it, no other entries to other contests) :D

Keep up the great work :)

Well, you can design it through LDD, but I would prefer actual builds.

I finished my MOC! But unfortunately the pictures for MOCs aren't showing. I saved the html code for the pictures and text, so that when it works again I'll just copy and paste the MOC :)

I only suggested it, I didn't say you had to be restricted to that. This was so people could get a decent entry completed in the time alotted. I'm actually just building for fun, and my thing would be a $90 set easily, maybe even more; I'm still not done.

Good to know. My build I'm estimating $70 here (its amazing how much Australia gets ripped off), I was planning to build my Sigfig's flagship at $120 ($250 here), but another contest came up.

Well, I decided to build something just for fun, but I'm not uploading it yet. Part of me wants to upload it now so I can finally show it off, but I have been working on this set for two weeks now, and with the MOCAthalon coming up, if it can fit one of the categories, that would be prefect. If I were t upload it now, it wouldn't be so popular. I'd upload it in the morning. I haven't even taken pictures yet anyway, so what am I talking about?

If I remember correctly, I don't believe you're allowed to upload old creations.

Here's one in creator theme. I actually really did the contest in Lego.com for making this a set, but I failed. Anyhow, here is my creation.

Unfortunately, I had to remove it from the group because what you've entered is an old creation and is therefore invalid.

Well Technically speaking, I have not uploaded it yet. Well sorta. On flikr with the Stingray, but I sorta labeled it as a WIP. But I haven't uploaded anything here about it. Now say I was on flickr two years ago and tried to pass an old MOC off, that would be against the rules. But what if you were building something right now, but weren't done until the MOCAthalon was about to start? You would still have an "old" MOC but it was never posted, and it happened to fit one of the categories, so then it could pass as being new.

Nice job catching that. I never did look at the date on that one. I took a sneak peek to see what they built, and while it did look good, if it was a Creator set, where is a list of all the pieces they used and where are the alternate pieces? I could easily through three builds with the same color scheme into one post and call it a Creator set. They used to be like that, but now there are only three builds per parts given, and it would have needed a list of parts to really verify it being Creator.

I thought you said it was remote controled. Whoops, sorry to put you through the trouble. But this really shows the playability of it, so it couldn't have hurt you anyway.

Thanks for all the entries. Ithink this was one of the most challenging contests because it was a little restrictive and asked for so much, but I was pleased with what you guys brought.

So after waiting to see if I could use it in the MocAthalon, my better judgment telling me otherwise right after and also seeing that there wasn't anything it could fit in, and then a week to cool off from the MocAthalon, my fun entry for this has now been posted on MOCpages.
