Making alternatives from large sets

What is your favorite technic for making alternate designs from medium and large technic sets?

I like to look at the pieces to see if any look specifically like something in real life. If they do, I try to make that.

I also look at some official technic sets. Some of these may give me ideas to try to replicate or make something similar to.
What are your thoughts?

I like the idea of large sets. One being that there are simply more pieces and secondly more room for things that the moc could do. I usualy just have one idea then try to make it happen to give myself the challenge. Then try to use Mlcad and Lpub to make the instructions for them so others including my sons can remake them.
