Thank you for asking! And yes, you may have a side game if you wish. Just a couple things. Please don't advertise it in here (this group has enough blah blah blah) and as much as we'd like to, the judges here won't be able to help out. There's going to be way too much going on in here.

I also agree with Bones... when are you going to have time without neglecting your team here?... something to think about.

Good luck!

Quoting Rules
Important note: Your team must coordinate who is building what. No duplication within a
category is allowed. The teams must decide WHO is building in WHICH category.

That is what happened. They posted 2 builds in the same category. Therefore, someone deleted theirs. This is punishable by DQ.

Dave, I am curious. When you get a bad score on a test do you demand to be able to take it again? Do you think if someone gets a speeding ticket they should be allowed to rip it up and start their trip all over? Then why do you think it would be ok for someone who gets a poor score in a CONTEST to be able to delete that entry, build it again and re-post it?

As for you leaving MOC Pages, I am not surprised, you seem like the type to run in the face of adversity.

I know I'm not a participant this year, but I plan to be in the future. I have a question in regards to forced perspective. In pretty much all the forced perspective entries I've seen so far, the judges keep saying it seems "underplayed" or something to that affect. I'm just curios how exactly you'd pull off a forced perspective that isn't "underplayed". Because usually the forced perspective is done on the horizon, and therefore it's not going to be the central element. What I mean is: you have to have mini-figs (or something) up front to show the contrast, otherwise the build just looks like micro-scale. I mean no disrespect, it just doesn't make sense to me why non of the builds displaying good "forced perspective" aren't getting higher scores.

Good question Ian. It was only a matter of time before somebody asked why we aren't really giving solid points for the Forced Perspective category.

I am merely speaking for myself here, you'll have to ask the other judges about their methods.

Whenever I see a LEGO category EXPLICITLY for Forced Perspective, I consider it to be the main part of the scene. Microscale buildings in the background just doesn't cut it for me. I want to see innovation and creativity in thinking out some FP.

Here is a terrific example of 5 point FP. http://www.flickr.com/photos/-infomaniac-/4935875228/

Another example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36769850@N05/5265285858/
FP categories are meant to be the main part of the scene.

Again, this is just my interpretation and thus, the way I judge my creations.

Hope this helps clarify.

I don't think it is "required" that the superhero be a known entity, but it would really help the judges in their score. It is much easier to award a score to a creation that LOOKS like it has a superhero theme than a creation that doesn't.

From my perspective, it doesn't HAVE to be a "known" superhero. Batman and Superman are great of course but making your own hero would be fine. I'd suggest just making sure we know who he is and what he can do. That was one of the things that hurt a build I judged a couple days ago. The build was nice but I had no idea who was the hero, who was the villian, or what either of them could do. (if you have trouble coming up with good backstories, have your team mates help out! That's what they're there for.).

As long as they're 1:1 scale (or really close to it) then that's fine. Like say, a chess set with all the pieces (but please don't do that. It's been done a thousand times) then that would be fine.

You know what happens when you assume something right? The judges score entries when they have time. It's also part of our job to come to this side of things and answer questions... like... what I'm doing now. There's no time frame on when the judges will judge any moc. Basically, the ONLY restriction for our time frame is that we get your entry judged by about a week after the games (and that's self imposed, not a hard and fast rule).

The judges are usually pretty good about judging as soon as they can. Since there's possibly going to be over a thousand entries this year, we're trying to keep up with it as much as possible.

Right about now I would usually make a joke about having to take time away from judging to come here and answer questions about when we judge but I'll refrain... oh wait, my bad.

Long story short... patience young padawan. We'll get there when we get there.

For number 7: Darwin Awards, the description says show "someone" killing themselves unintentionally. My question: am I allowed to show TWO people killing themselves unintentionally? I was thinking of doing a scene where two people cause both of their deaths by their collective stupidity. Is that allowed?

I have 4 kids, a full time job, a part-time video game review gig that kicked 4 video games my way last week, a ginormous LEGO project, a drinking habit to maintain, and a Bulldog who demands my full attention.

All you have to do is tell me when I should be able to fit judging into that schedule. Everyone else is still trying to figure out how I do it.

Nate, you are coming very very very very very close to a perma-ban on the chat site.

Why? An Admin's good judgment needs no explanation, but I shall condescend to explain anyway.

Aside from relentlessly impersonating people, you have decided it is in your best interest to disobey my direct instructions and requests NOT TO. Aside from that, you engage in less than reputable/respectable conversations and are continually getting banned/forgiven but refuse to change your ways. It is only by the good grace of myself and a couple others that you are allowed back in the chat room.

On top of that, you have the nerve to ask why I ban you for a whopping 1 hour every couple days? You sir, are pushing the envelope.

This may strike you as being rather cold and direct but that is exactly how I will treat any rule-breaker. Get on the wrong side of an judge and you WILL feel the consequences.

I am giving another chance.

Regarding Reynolds, he himself must approach me.

He has disgusted me in the worst way possible by posting links to p*** sites on a family-oriented chat site. There are few things that I will NOT TOLERATE but that is top of the list. This act infuriates me to the very core of my being.

Regardless, I wish to talk to him. Unfortunately for the other chatters, I shall allow him back tomorrow but shall be very strict with him.

I have a burning question. Judges, when you are organizing the MocOlympics, MocAthalon, etc, why do you use a five point scale? Not to be rude, but have you ever considered adding half points? Say 3.5 or 4.5. That way people wouldn't complain about creations that received a 3, while better creations got a 3 too. What is the reasoning; is it just ease of point tallying?

Well, I can't give you a precise answer on that - therefor you have to ask Chris.
I can only imagine that it is a "counterpart" or aequivalent to the five "smiley" system - there are only whole smileys...
Aside from the fact, that counting together half points would cause MUCH more work!
See it as a incitation to outdo yourself, to receive whole points ;-)

We use a 5 point scale because that's what we decided on... I'm not being a smart (bleep) here, but that's just it. Adding half scores would really just make our jobs that much harder. As of this point, we have 186 creations in this group and there's bound to be another 200 at least.

I know you're not trying to be rude so I'm returning the favor by doing my best not to be a... well, you know. But the simpliest answer is usually to correct one. We use a 5 point system because we chose to do so. Seriously, we could make this a 100 point system and someone would STILL find a reason to complain. They always... and I mean ALWAYS do.

For this category we're looking for your microscale version of an existing Lego model. If the one you're building doesn't exist, then you can't use it. You have to use an EXISTING Lego creation (moc or set) as your basis, not just a concept.

Of course! The mocs are still "your" creations. Once the games are over then it's yours to do with as you wish. (I only say "once the games are over" because someone may try to delete a post and repost to get a better score... yes, it's happened...). But yeah, it's yours to do with as you wish.

Question: How did you get the link in the first place?

But honestly, you need to find the link the CORRECT way so you can actually READ THE RULES before you join!

Why I bother....

19. Houston, We Have a Problem
These famous words must be illustrated through your creation. Not too much rules for this one, just make sure you can tie it in with the phrase.

I'm wondering how open this category is. On a previous entry I built a good MOC, but missed the category and received lower scores due to the fact that it was a medieval take when I should have stuck closer to the actual category. In this category, however, it directly says "not too much rules", so am I right in assuming that the same would not apply to this category, and that a "different" take on it would not bring lower scores as long as I tie this phrase in with the build? I'm sorry if this is an obvious question, but I just want to be reassured.

Thanks for your time.

This category give you more freedom than almost all of them. Interpretation is entirely up to you. Use it as you see fit.

Your first entry was slightly short of the mark because it didn't necessarily deal with "super heroes". It was a stunning 4 point build though.

Guys in reality, there are more than 8 different teams that had 1 or 2 people who weren't in the sign-up thread. I was discussing this with the judges in the beginning of the games and we decided to let them go because there would be a significant decrease of team quality.

Sorta a weird question here: for the "King For a Day" category and the "Bill Me Later" category, where is the line drawn between thoe two? I ask because you say (basically), "Do what you want" for the King For a Day category, and the Bill Me Later category says "Go all out". Money, after all, can buy alot of powerful, expensive things to make you feel like a king...things like advanced weaponry, perhaps? *wink, wink* Could you maybe clarify the differences between the two categories little bit? Thanks!

"Bill me Later" involves money or spending (purchasing large quantities of LEGO products or something like that. "King for a Day" is more of a power to do something (like playing paintball in the white-house, as one of the contestants put it).

That is the main difference I see. I wasn't the one to design the category, so I think you should probably hear from them.

Hope that helps!

Adding it to this group is the main thing. But please do ask that your admin changes the settings so that you can add it to your group.

Short answer, no, you'll get it in your group in the next day or two either way so it's not a big deal (just don't forget to add it to your private group later).

Well, my rproblem is that I am going on vacation and I will not be back until the 2nd of April, so I will not be able to add it to the group because I leave tomorrow in the early morning, I can still get one in today later, but my second one will not get in the private group until I get back. The word is spelled "DOES".
The MOCAthalon, as stated in the rules, is from 3/1/12 to 3/30/12. No entries posted 3/31 will be judged, there are no rounds, just 30 days to build as many of the 30 categories as you can.

This query is more directed at Chris, because I think he has the ability to fix it. Because my account is new, I need to wait for my MOCs to be approved before they become visible. I can still add them to groups though, so if I add my entries to the MOCathalon group before the closing time but they're not approved by moderators yet, can they still be accepted?

Comparing where my entry is visible within the thumbnails of my group's set (probably a glitch I think), MOCpages would be able to show that my entries were submitted before the end of the entry period.

Cheers!

Now I wanted to make a MOC based on the little match girl, is this allowed? (I do think so, but just to make sure) It does sort of ends in a good way. the girl at least lives happily ever after in heaven.

I think the "Happily Ever After" was just used to highlight the fairy tale category, afterall, in Red Riding Hood, the wolf does not live happily ever after. So yeah, your idea is fine.

For about the fifth time, the deadline is merely for posting the entries to this group. The group pool will be locked at 12:00 on the 31st (or 11:59 on the 30th EST). The judges will then judge the entries as they can. Focus on getting your entries in, and we'll do the rest.

I considered creating a Java screen-scraping program but, in the interest of my sanity, decided against it. :P

Will Mr. Kelso be making a missed entry thread anytime soon? I've noticed a few entries including mine haven't been judged yet.

(NOTE: This isn't a pressing question, so don't feel the need to answer it right away; keep hacking away at the judging first!)

I'm curious as to how the scores are added up by the judges. Since there's 568 entries spread amongst 40-something teams, you guys must have SOME type of system in place to ease the burden; you can't just be doing this by hand...right? Care to share your trade secret, or do you want to keep it under wraps so would-be cheaters don't make your life a royal pain :) Thanks for all the hard work!

Paul, I designed an excel spreadsheet and I track the scores on that. The sheet is designed to automatically tally the scores and sort the teams from 1-40. It is a bit time consuming considering I have to go back and look at each entry multiple times as the judges score them. Then, I get to go back through the teams and ensure I tallied the scores correctly, even with all that, some small errors could be made, so it is a good idea for each team to tally their scores as well and compare them to the official scores. Please do not do that until the FINAL scores are posted as they are still changing as judges finish up their scoring. Good question by the way.

Before the judges lose their minds and collectively EAT your soul, I'll answer this for them: soon...very soon. There are still a few stragglers that have to be judged, the scores to be added up, and a proper announcement has to be put together. Remember, the judges aren't sitting at home all the time glued to MOCpages; they've got real lives...at least, that's what I hear. Hope that helps!
