Just wanted to thank the players who are following the rules and taking the time to post not only quality builds, but following the basic rules, and understanding the basics of the game....you know....like you actually read the rules.

Please bare with us as we clean up some of the players who don't want to participate, and are only causing trouble.

nah, spare the headache. just copy and paste all of the rules and then explain to them that they are utter failures for not following directions. then leave them a link that takes them somewhere they can get rick-rolled.

Most of the "best" entries take more than 2 days to build, therefore you'll notice more mediocre MOCs in the first few days of the MocAthalon

Just finished my first entry :)
Flare's right, the best entries willl start appearing somewhere in the middle of the competition.
At first I thought about waiting to post my entries untill the deadline but that wouldn't be nice for the judges would it ?
I decided the judges' mood is a more important factor ;)

I invited Nick to a side group where hopefully I can help explain things to him. He's a good guy I think he just got a little confused.

Also had to take care of a fringe group that started up after the games started (the one that added 20whatever mocs a minute ago).

A judges work is never done... haha

Just hang in there: only 25+ days of judging, commenting, instructing, and yelling at your computer screen lay ahead...

But seriously, you guys are doing a fabulous job; keep it up, and we promise not to stage massive protests when you judge next year's contest :)

Seems kinda lame and I want to know why it's done that way?

Well Alex, we are judging based off of a system which we have already outlined in the rules. Simply because a judge does not agree with what you think does not make it wrong. That is why we have 6 judges, we all see things a little different. Thansk for the input.

This is a typical response from someone who doesn't understand judging science.

You are assuming that each creation has its own skill level and that they all fit nicely into their neat little rows. For example, all the creations that earned a 4 would obviously fit in the 4 category and they would all be exactly the same as far as quality goes.

If only it were so...

Lets be honest, there is an infinitesimally small blurring of the lines between the points that we hand out. So instead of a rounded 4 it would be a 4 with an infinite amount of decimals behind it. And the admins are given the job of lumping them into the categories as we see fit.

So when there is a creation that receives a 3, and better creation that ALSO receives a 3, you're surprised??? To put things mathematically, the first may have received a 3.0809887 while the second may have received a 3.9987097! (Or, assuming that we round it, a 2.5687987 compared to a 3.46786980.)

The judges decisions are subjective, but that doesn't mean we don't have a science behind our logic. We don't randomly assign numbers based off of first impressions.

The judges will supply firm evidence and reason for their scores if you ask them. Whenever I post a debatable score, I try my best to explain my reasoning. If you ask the other judges, they will explain theirs.

In summary, when you are given 111 DIFFERENT creations, all with DIFFERENT skill levels and are asked to divide that into scores 0-5, there WILL ALWAYS BE creations of varying skill levels that are lumped in the same category.

If you want, we could judge your creations on a level of 0-10000 next time though...

Agreed. It's dem crazy teenage hormones: they think they're a demi-god at that age, trying to act tough and doing silly things. Case in point: I can remember trying to impress a pair of girls by eating a whole jalapeno pepper, seeds and all. My reward came in the form of nearly passing out from a high-heart-rate and having to lay there while I got laughed at. The moral of my story? Don't be a tough guy; use your head and follow the rules...or you may end up flat on your back getting laughed at :P

But seriously, the 'Likes' counter thing isn't bothering me too much. It's rough keeping a website bug-free, and despite humanity's best efforts, machines will always keep inventing new ways to make humans' lives difficult. Honestly, I hope it doesn't get fixed. I've heard to many newer builders say that nobody likes their creations because their most popular creation only has four "likes". I think it would be better without.

Discouraging "capitalism" is never an answer. For many, (myself included) the likes system is a way to externally evaluate the creations. Without it, there would be no real encouragement for success or quality creations.

Just my view.

Well, I guess you have a point there. I guess one if the reasons I continually post on here is to try and get more "likes". I also admit that I do (sometimes) use the "likes" to decide whether or not it is worth my time to look at a creation. But in some cases the creation is really good but the builder is not very well known. So his creations have very few "likes". That's why (in my opinion) the "likes" system isn't entirely reliable. But, of course, this is just my opinion.

But it has its flaws, how do you evaluate a creation when people just like it because its funny or is what they like, you get no contrast or real feedback.

Bah, a typical capitalist response. I think we should go with the Communist system: we should have an automatic 'like' system in place. You get 1 like for posting a creation, a few more for the amount of pictures you have uploaded (maybe 20 pics should be the threshold), and a few more should be thrown your way for commenting and liking other comrad-er, people's, creations. It's the fair way to go. The only trouble is quality of the build will not be taken into account, but hey, who cares as long as you're gettin 'likes', right?

(before I get spammed, I'm joking people...)

if you're having trouble with your pictures getting pixelated and looking bad when you upload them, the Java uploader really helps that.

Maybe I'm just behind the times, but I found it to be helpful.

No, it hasn't gotten that far quite yet considering that only 6 of us use it consistently. Whether or not we are trend-setters is quite a different story though... :P

I'm the type of person that looks for/keys into/observes patterns... and yup, I've noted the same thing. I've been thinking about all of this... I think I understand the reasons/ideas behind only having a 5 point scoring spread as opposed to a 10 point one. But perhaps... scoring should extend into the 1st place past the decimal point? There might not be the need for so much scraping! Just a thought to think about for next year's contest? :)

This is an epic, epic, epic quote.
You know, the word epic, is really quite epic, as voted for by the most epic council of epic peoples, in the epic year of 2012, or epically close.
Either way, you have to be epic to say the word epic as many times as epic old me and not get epically bored.
Now that is epically epic!
Even by my epic standards

Can't wait for the official announcment! My prediction, just by looking at a broad view of the whole contest? A close battle between the star-studded Common Elements and the surprise-attackers Team Jigsaw is likely. From where I'm standing, it looks like GAIA, Globetrotters, Killah Bricks, Team Intrepid, and (hopefully) MOCtely Crew will be fighting for the top five spots. But all eyes will be mainly focused on the top-two teams. Who will win? Will Common Element's artistic entries and ice-cold determination win the day? Or is Jigsaw's surprise flood of mind-blowing and original creations enough to take the prize? The tension is killing me!

Yes... yes it does.

(By the way... quoted!)

Seriously though, please understand that it's not by any stretch that you've been singled out for what you feel (and quite possibly rightfully so) is an oversight of not responding to your comments. However...

Take into account that this group has 276 members, each with comments and questions that are begging to be answered and that sometimes... just sometimes... people slip through the cracks.

Also, take into account that not only am I running this game, I'm also one of three people running the ENTIRE website... with over 80,000 members (probably only about 50,000 active) that's a LOT of issues to deal with on a daily basis. Sure, not all 50 odd thousand of them need attention every day (that would be impossible) but there's a good portion of people that do need help and other issues that need to be dealt with.

So no, we're not ignoring you... it's just prioritizing.

There... feel better now?

Ok, winners have been posted. Back to moderating the REST of the website...

That is hardly a "simple" solution.

How so?
If you don't have time for so few Mods, get people who are almost Mods to become Mods and your problem is solved.

Initiating a new Mod is a really big deal. You have to have the cermony in a ruined cathedral (which are hard to rent out for the evening), you need ceremonial robes (They take forver to order, believe me), and the inductee needs to be isolated from the world for three months with only stale bread, water, and an Atari without any games to keep him company.

Quoting Hayden .

Having "typed" myself hoarse in the chatroom regarding this issue a couple times, it feels that most on this site misunderstand the responsibility the administration have (or the qualities required to be there). Please understand that I am not saying that I know everything or that I understand the jobs they do (because we'll NEVER be able to grasp their sacrifice). I am merely speaking from my humble observations. Having been on this site 3 years now, I have crossed swords with them on a couple different occasions. It is through those experiences though that I have come to realize some of the stuff that goes on "behind the scenes".

Right now, MOCpages is blessed to have the perfect triumvirate; The "King" and his two "Lords". This is working and always will work. There is an INCREDIBLE liability in appointing somebody else. Aside from the legal ramifications, it would also weaken the administration. The more power that is dispersed, the better chance that the power will be diluted and abused. Communication would be more difficult, research and a background check would be required, and it would drastically weaken the perfectly healthy "triumvirate". So yes, it wouldn't be a "simple" solution. If anything, it would complicate matters drastically. (Of course, I bet they'll appoint a new moderator right after I post this message, just to spite me... xD) I feel secure knowing that I have 3 trusted and honorable people watching over the site. If they allowed "anyone" (as you say) to become a moderator, I would probably leave this site within the fortnight knowing that my security would be compromised.

If the Moderators/Administrator were feeling pushed or needed help, I am sure they would recruit someone they trusted completely.

(Well written post)

Thank you.

And to everyone else, don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining by any stretch about my responsibilities here. I enjoy working for Sean and I think that Mark and I do an above adequate job of running things around here.

We have actually scoped a few people and tested the waters as it were so if the need ever arose in which we'd need another moderator, we have a short list (probably people you wouldn't think of) of possibles.

In the mean time, thanks again Blake.

finding a MOD wouldn't be so easy either I think, there's no way I would do the job, even I could, the only nice thing you get is that sweet thing under your avatar saying "MOD" the rest is all work and time consumation, NO thank you :P
Let's just keep it as it is and perhaps worship the current mods as gods or something :P
