In the immortal words of Heath Ledger...
And here... we... go!
Your categories for the 2012 MocAthalon!
Just a quick refresher first. Your team has until March 30th to build as many of the categories as you can. No entries after the 30th will be accepted.
You MUST include near the TOP (remember, active links will NOT work in the "introduction" section. Place it near the top of the main box) of your post what TEAM you are on AND what CATEGORY you are posting in. You MUST also include a WORKING link to the main MocAthalon group.
You MUST add your creation to this group AND your team's private group. Once the moc is added to the group it's OURS and will be judged as is. No changes may be made after it is added to the group.
Any moc not meeting this criteria will not be judged.
Each moc MUST be a COMPLETELY NEW BUILD! No reusing old mocs in ANY way.
Other than that... I think you all know what to do. As usual, if you have any questions please ask them in the question thread. Good luck!
Your categories are:
There are no size restrictions unless otherwise stipulated in the description.
1: Adventure Time!
Build a MOC, any size; depicting an adventurous person in an exciting scene like is seen in Indiana Jones, The Mummy or other adventure films. IE: Indiana Jones, Pharaoh’s Quest, Adventures, The Mummy, etc.
2: A Day at the Circus:
Ladies and gentleman -- boys and girls, the traveling circus is in town! It's time for you to be the ringmaster and depict a day at the circus in LEGO! Will you create a small scene, or a big tent? It's up to you. Make it colorful and fun for big points! (Duplo animals may be used as well)
3: Ghost Hunters
Build a MOC based on Ghost Hunting. This can be something like the Ghost Hunter’s show on SYFY, or Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel. (Google them if you do not know what those are about). The focus must be on ghosts, no vampires, werewolves, etc.
4: St. Patrick’s Day
Build a wicked cool St. Patrick’s Day MOC. Anything you wish, but the theme must be St. Patrick’s Day. 16x16 or smaller.
5. Lord of the Rings
LEGO is coming out with their own line of LOTR, here is your chance to show how YOU would design the sets. Build a MOC that depicts a scene from LOTR, and build it like you work for Lego. Therefore, playability is a major factor here as is great parts usage.
6. The Supers are Back!
Design and build a MOC based on Superheroes. Use Lego’s superhero figs or design your own, but build a scene of superheroes (or super villains) in action.
7. Darwin Awards
A throwback to Kelso's contest from a few years ago.
Show someone unintentionally killing themselves in the most ironic way
possible. The more crazier the better but it must be "grounded" (get
it... that's a burial joke there...) in reality (to a point).
8. The Princess Bride
Here we have a nod to Chris Phipson’s girlie side. Build a scene from the movie “The Princess Bride”, any scene.
9. Alternate Star Wars:
Build a MOC showing an alternate history in Star Wars. IE: Vader kills Obi Wan on that lava planet, Vader kills Luke on the Death Star, the separatists win the clone wars, anything you want!
10. Ars Historia:
Build a iconic scene of human history - once you chosen one, give us an article/proof/evidence for it (wiki/etc.) - in example: the murder of Caesar in 44 BC - please try to avoid WW I and WW II, it's getting boring ;-)
11. Myths and Legends:
Build a scene showing a famous myth or legend. IE: Paul Bunyon, Olympus, Headless Horseman, etc.
12 .Ovids Metamorphose:
Tell a story about a Metamorphose - can be based on a real Metamorphose story (Ovid/Kafka/whatever) or play with your fantasy!
13. The Ides of March:
Great men, falls by treason and conspiracy! Tell us a story of assassination, treason and crime...
14. The Elephant and the Fly:
Choose a large-scale-model you like and build it in Microscale - don't forget to link your chosen subject!
15. Castaway
Grab your bricks and build a place that you would love to be shipwrecked on!
16. Fairy Tales
Release the inner princess in you by making a scene from a fairy tale. Whether its Alice in Wonderland or Snow-White, be sure it contains elements from a fairy tale. It can be a cross between multiple stories, for example, "Little Red Riding hood meets Cinderella climbing the Beanstalk". No size restrictions, just make sure it ends with everyone living "happily ever after"!
17. ApocaMOC
2012 has come and gone, and those remaining on earth are surviving as best they can. Build an apocalyptic scene that clearly shows elements of the apocalypse. Anything from an iron-plated ambulance with a machine gun on top, to a impregnable post office building with razor-wire and zombie-proof doors. Definitions of the apocalypse can be anything from zombies, to aliens, to nuclear destruction, etc. Make sure it has clear 'end-of-earth' qualities about it.
18. Out of Lego
Choose something in real life, and build a 1:1 scale replica of it out of LEGO. For example, build a model of a pencil out of LEGO, or perhaps a book, or maybe a cell-phone. Any object, any size.
19. Houston, We Have a Problem
These famous words must be illustrated through your creation. Not too much rules for this one, just make sure you can tie it in with the phrase.
20. Vignetted
This category is meant to challenge you to build small and detailed. NPU (Nice Part Usage) is a must as you try to make your scene as detailed and complex as possible. Quality vignettes will have draw-dropping details while not being too cluttered or busy. To challenge you even further, this category has a 16x16 size limit. Anything larger than that will be susceptible to DQ. No restrictions on the content.
21. Time Warp
You have successfully invented a time machine that can take you just about anywhere in time! Do you travel into the future or history? You decide, as you show your time travel in a LEGO creation. Make sure you show us your time machine (so we can steal the design), along with the setting for the time travel.
22. Will it Blend?
Just like Tom Dickson, you need to find 2 themes to blend together and build a creation representing the blending of both. For example, Spastle (space and castle), Friend-Punk (Friends and steampunk), or Mechars (mechas and cars). The only requirement is that you use your imagination to find a magical blend of themes.
23. Vanishing Eden
Create a MOC that touches on environmental consciousness. Pick a life form or location from anywhere in the world that is threatened, and do a MOC that raises awareness.
24. The Dog Ate my Homework
Heard that one a million times. But, show us YOUR best reason for not having it to hand in. Did it get caught in the garage door opener? Did you get attacked by a bus full of angry penguins? What's your excuse, mister?
25. King For a Day
How would things be if YOU were in charge? Would you sit on a throne and rule from on high? Would you rid the streets of crime and abolish world hunger? Would you dress Phipson in a gopher suit and make him ride a unicycle while singing the national anthem of Bangladesh? It's your world for 24 hours. What would you do?
26. MOCing the 80’s
Ah the 1980’s, the good old days, Dennis Price’s favorite decade! Build us a MOC that shows something iconic from the 801’s. It can be a famous movie such as Breakfast Club or Terminator, a popular TV show such as Magnum PI, Simon and Simon, or Dallas; or famous music, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Motley Crue, Duran Duran. Anything you want, just make it 80’s!
27. Forced Perspective
Build a moc using forced perspective. The differing scales can be anything you wish as long as we are given the illusion of forced perspective.
28. LEGOLAND
Create your very own microscale LEGOLAND theme park complete with rides, food stands, and whatever else you wish to fill your park with.
29. Tropical Paradise
It's cold outside, as Old Man Winter takes his toll on everywhere we all dream of warmer places. Build a tropical paradise you'd rather be vacationing at. Will it be a tourist hot spot or a deserted island? It's up to you, with no size restrictions, and as always the more detailed and creative you are....the bigger the points! Bring some beauty and warmth to those of us who are shoveling snow!
30. Bill Me Later
It's the American dream. Have 2.5 kids, a job you can't stand, a nagging wife, and enough debt to bury you for life. Being in debt doesn't stop you, and you just bought the ultimate thing you've always wanted and put it on credit. Show us what you just bought. Huge boat? Jet? Ginormous mansion? Make it extravagant playa...you have 0% interest for a year and didn't have to put any money down....so go all out!
And that's it, good luck everyone!
