Round 2

 Group admin
Welcome to Round 2 of the Middle Earth Lego Olympics! We highly encourage all surviving contestants to read most of what follows. If you come grumbling to us (not having read this) we’ll just say something to the effect of “Told you so!” or “Serves you right!” so pay attention! Now that that’s settled…

Before going any further, I’d just like to applaud everyone who participated in Round 1. We’ve had quite a turn out with some excellent entries! Thanks for all the good effort, contestants! * applause*

The top thirty-two of you will now be advancing into the one-on-on elimination rounds. The theme for our first set of categories is “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Each of you is paired with an opponent (below) in an assigned category and bracket. Before you ask, your rendition of your category can be from either the book or the movie. We’ve tried to craft the categories in such a way that they’re compatible with both. The little write-ups beneath the categories are simply meant to be fun, providing little bits of context. Don’t feel limited by them, though please stay on topic! Note: the brackets (Barad Dur & Orthanc) serve simply to divide all players into two groups for judging.

Round 2 ends at 11:59pm (MOCpages time) on 1/20/13. No Round 2 entries will be accepted into the group after that time.

At this point I highly encourage everyone still playing to go re-read the “Rules” thread. The elimination rounds are slightly different from the qualifier. Make sure you know what you’re doing! I’d like to call particular attention to LINKS (see rule #4). This past round a surprising number of you were missing links or did them incorrectly. We judges take these things into account as we score. In the qualifier, anyone who ignored their “mercy reminder” and failed to have a working link by the deadline lost three points from each judge. In the elimination rounds judging will now be conducted by way of votes, but missing items will still hold sway in your judge’s decisions. You’ve been fairly warned! Take it or leave it. I’m not going to give out reminders this coming round. Pay attention to the rules people, it’s not that hard! Note: the rules have been refreshed in several areas as well. We’ve worked out and touched on some of the kinks that popped up in Round 1. Once again, we highly encourage all of you to take just 5-7mins to re-read the rules carefully.

Required for all Round 2 entries:

-Title your entry: MELO Round 2: [your name] vs. [your opponent’s name]

-State your bracket (Barad Dur or Orthanc) FIRST THING in the intro box. As there are two sets of judges, this immediately informs them if your entry is in their bracket or not. It’s a courtesy!

-Provide a WORKING link to your opponent’s homepage or entry (depending on which of you posts first), placed preferably near the top of your entry’s page. You can also include a link to the MELO homepage if you’d like (appreciated, but not required).

-State the category you’re playing in, preferably near the top of your page.

And now, ladies and gentlemen (mostly gentlemen), here is the moment you’ve all been waiting for!

The Match-ups and Categories! *applause (again)*

Barad Dur Bracket: Your judges are Mark Murphy, Christopher Baldacci, and Ian Spacek. The judges are not required to give feedback on their decisions.

Playing in this bracket we have…

Buurli Burri vs. Mister Lego
Category: A Long Expected Party
Bilbo Baggins is turning 111, Frodo is coming of age, and Gandalf is in town! How do hobbits party!? Show us the festivities! And perhaps some fireworks on the side?

Justin M vs. Poggle 55
Category: The Prancing Pony
An inn in the village of Bree. Gandalf hasn't arrived, black riders are in the vicinity, and a grim man sits in the shadows. "What his real name is I haven't heard, but around here he's known as Strider." Show us what you can do with this formidable set of circumstances!

Disco 86 vs. Monsterlego
Category: Flight to the Ford
Frodo has been stabbed by a Morgal blade. His time is running out. A fair elf offers assistance, but the Nazgul are closing in! Can Frodo's friends get him to Rivendell before The Nine catch them up!? Giddy up horsey! Show us whatcha' got! Perhaps try talking to the river...just a thought.

Kenton Lanier vs. Aidan Frusher
Category: "Fool of a Took!"
Whether it’s an incident involving a dragonish firework, or something more like pushing skeletons down abyssal wells, show us one of those typical "Pippin" moments from Fellowship of the Ring.

Justin Knelsen vs. Linnea Stevens
Category: Duel of the Graybeards
So what do you get when you put two elderly gentlemen in a tower and hand them magical staffs? It's not your typical chess game, I'll give you that much. Now show us the rest!

Martin Geistefeldt vs. Josh Walter
Category: The Gates of Durin
What do mysterious glowing gates, the word friend, and a foul tentacled monster have in common? Describe the answer in bricks.

Dodge vs. A.N.C. Hunt
Category: The Pass of Caradhras
Nine snowmen on a mountain. Some are short, some are tall. One has a pointy hat, and another, pointy ears. And to add to this odd display, a blizzard causing wizard screaming several miles away. Saruman is trying to bring down the mountain!! Things look pretty bleak for the Fellowship...
Fed up with snow? Let's see it in Lego elements!

Derrick Rose vs. Rory Simpson
Category: Amon Hen
A hundred fighting Uruk-Hai against one man, one elf, and one dwarf. The odds are looking pretty slim (for the Uruks). Depict this epic finale of combat with your bricks!

Orthanc Bracket: Your judges are Michael Kringe, Max Pointner, and Aidan Moon. The judges are not required to give feedback on their decisions.

And playing in this bracket we have…

Kyle Ransom vs. Garrett A
Category: A shortcut to mushrooms
Frodo and Sam are on the road, Merry and Pippin are stealing from farmer Maggot, and rumors of ominous riders in black plague the countryside. Build us the beginning of the journey!

Jackson Williams vs. Hugo Van
Category: Weathertop
Four hobbits in an ancient watchtower. Roasted tomatoes were a bad idea. Strider is who knows where, it's dark, and the Wraiths aren't far off. Build on the suspense!

LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist vs. A Sargent
Category: The Council of Elrond
The races convene to decide the fate of the Ring. Men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits. Unfortunately they don't all get along.
At least Rivendell is a nice venue, right?! Get building!

David vs. Toa Infernum
Category: The caverns of Isengard
Saruman is going industrial! He's forging an army in the caverns of Isengard. His workers aren't quite your "Santa's little helpers" and his products are far from typical merchandise (if such a thing exists). The Uruks are underway! Let's see you put his factories into bricks!
The Lego "Orc Forge" set...seriously? Come on, you're better than that!!

Grant Davis vs. Nathan Oh
Category: Balin's Tomb
Gandalf, being his usual optimistic self, reads: "We cannot get out. They are coming." The Fellowship finds themselves in a fix once again! Trapped miles below the surface in a burial chamber of stone, they fight desperately for their lives (a line you've probably never heard before in the whole of your life). The goblins are thirsty for blood and remember: "They have a cave-troll!" Show us what you can do!

Matthew Oh vs. Lee Muzzy
Category: "You shall not pass!"
The typical last words of your average wizard. A narrow bridge, an inviting drop, a demon of the ancient world, and an old man with a walking stick. Build WELL or I'm warning you: "you shall not pass."

Brick Tales vs. John Daniels
Category: The mirror a Galadriel
Don't expect a reflection. "The mirror shows many things, things that are, things that were, and some things that have not yet come to pass." Be creative! "What will WE see?"

Finn tegotash vs. Jacob Nion
Category: The Breaking of the Fellowship
Boromir's last stand, Merry and Pippin are captured, Frodo and Sam continue towards Mordor, and Aragorn, Lego(las), and Gimli are left to decide on their best course of action. Build us the dramatic ending! Or just part of it.

And there you have it folks, Round 2 is now in full swing. Get building!
“So it begins.” ~Theoden

A challenging category for me, this'll be fun! It'll be good to do something a little out of my comfort zone, with a dash of humour and hopefully a liberal dash of waterfalls... Wish I had some of the new elves from the Hobbit sets, I guess a couple blonds will have to do.

Well, I must confess, now I have more time, I didn't expect to get that high. There are some that I was surprised to have beaten! But I am glad, and truly honored to get eighth. Now the question is, where in the world of middle earth am I gonna get some orcs in ten days? I got plenty of uruks, no problems there, and mah birthday is drawing VERY close. I'll have to make some customs. Yep, customs it is.

No, I believe we will get an Orthanc set, most likely a collectors edition or a massive one. Just because we get a part of a set, does not mean we won't get the rest. Take the PotC for example, we got the captains cabin of the queen annes revenge, and we got the ship. But, only time will tell.
