Welcome to the qualifier: round one of the Middle Earth Lego Olympics!

The round begins now and ends at 11:59 PM (MOCpages time) on January 6th, 2013.

This round is a free-for-all. Anyone can enter at anytime before the deadline (given above)! You are permitted to build anything pertaining to either 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy or 'The Hobbit'. Make sure your entry meets all the rules and you'll be good to go! The judges are simply looking for good builds (clever techniques/PU, color, presentation, etc.). With the fairly recent release of the Lego LOTR sets, the Lego LOTR video game, and the coming release of 'The Hobbit' movie (part 1), we simply want to see what interesting and creative things you can do with this much loved theme!

Once round one ends, the judges will score all the entries. The players receiving the top thirty-two scores will move on to the elimination rounds.

Let the games begin!

Hi, Ian, thanks a lot for the invite, but, as you know, I've got all my Lego packed up, so I won't be able to compete here.

On another note, will this become an annual event? It sounds like a great idea, and I'd love the compete!

Yes, we hope to make this an annual event, if this one is successful. And since there are 2 new Middle Earth based movies in 2013 and 2014, we will for sure get another wave of interested and skilled Middle Earth MOCCers.

Wow, it's wonderful to see all the enthusiasm! Don't feel super pressured though guys. You've got a month to get your entries done! I think I'm going to move the deadline to 1/6/13, so that the qualifier ends on a Sunday.

Having study many of your guys questions, I've also gone in and refreshed the rules a little bit. Nothing is dramatically changed, I just tried to make a few things clearer.

Sorry Daniel, only one is allowed. I've also had several people inquire after an MIT of sorts, but I regret to inform you that there will not be one this year.

For the qualifier, entries receive a score of ?/10 from each judge. As there a six judges, each contestant will receive a total score of ?/60. We will try and release a standings thread at the end of round one.

So if I were to make a scene from LOTR lore, would that be acceptable? In LOTR it was mentioned that Amon Sul was an ancient watchtower overrun by the Witchking of Agmar and his army of orcs in the olden days.

Would I be allowed to create a weathertop (Amon Sul) scene depicting the battle of the ancient days? Because five Nazgul surrounding a couple of hobbits isn't nearly as interesting as an all-out battle scene.

EDIT: I just found out that that was also the meeting-place of Azog and his orcs, where he killed Yazneg, the *late* orc leader. If I can't do the battle I mentioned above, I could certainly do that scene, right?

I think you should steer clear of the first idea but I believe that it would be legal to make the scene of Yaznegs death because it is in the movie. I also think that the five attacking Nazguls could be quite interesting, especially in glowing mode (Maybe as maxifigures). The judges can correct me if any of my opinions were false.

My entry is still slowly coming along. It's going to be a 48-48 scene, with quite a lot of landscape, an enourmous 24 stud wide and 48 stud long SNOT river, and my first actual attempt at a good bridge. I've been working on it nonstop for 4 days now, and I hope to finish in time for the deadline. I learned the hard way that building a river so that it curves, and then adding a fortress and a bridge with some hovels sourrounding it, is very difficult. Good luck to all, and a merry christmas! ~RORY~

I will ask him to let me know when he posts it, to see if he makes the deadline, BUT, Ian, if he posts on the 6th, he is a fairly new member, so his creation must go by the moderators of this site, so if it is late, it is not his fault. I thought I would just run that by you to clarify if he may get in.

It's okay Everett. As you're seemingly new to the website, I recognize that you're probably not familiar with the HTML codes and such.

Allow me to offer a little help:

When you post a creation (or edit a creation) there is a small sentence in the top right hand corner of the gray picture/uploading box. It says "enter plain text or learn some simple HTML." If you click on the blue part of that sentence a whole new page will open up with all the things you need to know about HTML. It includes instruction on how to create working links. I also included the actual HTML script that you need at the end of one of my comments on your entries.

[EDIT] As so many people have been struggling with the links, there's now an update in the rules thread providing some information about creating HTML links. You might want to go check that out too.

I had ordered a ton of bricks from BL, but they still haven't come. So I am unable to build what I originally wanted to. Since today was the last chance I had to check, I clearly am too late. Also, school starts tomorrow and I have a boatload of work to do for that (I'm finishing High School this year... )

I promise, though, that as soon as i have the time I will build the Weathertop i was planning on building. I am also hoping to find even a scrap of time to whip something up for the ABS Forever 300 Members' contest.

I cannot give specifics but I will say that I was quite impressed with most of the entries. Especially the topic choices.

And that's a wrap on the MELO Round One! Sixty three entries, well played guys! For those of you who didn't compete, there's always next year (most likely). The judges will finish up judging over the next couple of days and if all goes as planned Round 2 will be launched on Thursday night. *takes a deep breath* Onwards to the elimination rounds!!

Hey Ian I know you can't tell me my score but um would you mind [if its not to much trouble] telling me your personal honest opinion of my entry and the same goes for any of you other judges who see this post

That IS to much trouble! ;)

If I give an opinion to one contestant, then fairness demands that I'm willing to give an opinion to any contestant who asks. Frankly, I don't have that kind of time. Sorry mate!

For the same reasons as Ian I am not giving any specific reasons for my judging, nor my opinions on each creation, as he said I do not have nearly enough time for that.

Can I make and organise an mit for those(like me[dang, i should have spent more time on my entry]) who are ellemenated? If you say no, I will proabably make another lord of the rings contest. But, what harm would it do if I made an mit? I am eager to hear what you think.

If you really want to throw together an MIT of sorts, that's okay. However, the official MELO is not going to support or advertise it in any way. We announced that we would not be hosting an MIT this year, and we mean to keep to our word. That said, do what you like, we're just not going to be involved.

I will point out though, you don't know for certain whether you're even really out yet. Just sayin'.

I enjoyed looking at all of the entries and how varied each was in technique and detail - even if some were the same (some scenes are just too iconic not to have repeats) - and I can't wait for the judges scores. I hope each of you (judges) gives at least a simple overview on each build along with your scores; nothing long-winded, just a simple "i liked that [insert thing liked here]" or something lol. Thanks again for the contest; this has been fun.

No overviews, sorry, don't got time for that. You're scores are being done in the same fashion as the MOs.

Hopefully we'll at least do it for two more years (with the releases of the other Hobbit films). Thirty-two contestants will be moving on.

Great turn out this year, congratulations on a contest well run so far. Nearly had enough for a 64 player tournament!

Yes, if it is still popular next year we may be able to do 64 people instead of 32.

Like Mark said, I believe there has been discussion about sizing up, but at the same time I don't want to be running another MO sized/styled contest (especially in such close proximity to the official MOs). I'm currently planning on keeping it at 32. I particularly wouldn't want this contest to detract from participation in the MOCOlympics. It was here first and deserves to be first.

I agree. Besides, I do not think we are going to get that many more creations that are confined to middle earth anyway, keeping it small is just as good as making it bigger.

Your creation has already been judged and rated by the judges. We do not judge on the creation, but on a secret group. It is much faster and more convenient. You will not learn your score.

No scores will be posted til today, but I think Ian is posting the averages of all the scores.

what is the entry time for the next Olympics? (which by the way should totally become annual!) and also will the rules be the same?
if you can answer, please do.
Thanks!
