Yes, Tolkien and CS Lewis were friends and wrote their books right after WW2. I don't know if Tolkien did but CS Lewis fought in the war.

Yes he did.He suffered shellshock at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and I believe he began writing the Silmarillion in an army camp in either 1916 or 1917.
