Alrighty everyone, welcome to round two of the 2011 MocOlympics! This is the first of the "one on one elimination rounds." Below you will find your matchups with your opponent and your category.

You all know most of the rules at this point but let's just go over them again to make sure.

Round two starts NOW and will end at 11:59 pm, MOCpages time (Saturday) October 1st. No entries will be accepted after this time.

Your entry MUST:
Be titled "MocOlympics (may be shortened to MO) round 2 "you" vs "Your opponent." You may title it anything you wish after that but that must be the opening of the title.

Near the TOP of the entry you must state what category you are playing in and you must have a WORKING link to both the MocOlympics group AND your opponent's page. If you post your entry first then their homepage is fine, if they post first then link to their entry please. (You do not have to change it to their entry after they post but it would be nice to them if you did. Again, not needed and you will NOT be docked in any way if you don't. Your choice)

You must add your entry to the group pool (no, you don't need to leave any links, adding it to the group is good enough). Once you add it to the group, that's it, it's OURS and NO changes may be made. We STRONGLY suggest that you get feedback from others before adding it to the group. If any changes need to be made please do so BEFORE you add it to the group pool. The judges will NOT look at it until it's added to the group.

Once you and your opponent have posted and added to the group, the judges will vote on the mocs. There will be three judges for each matchup (divided by the brackets). You must receive 2 out of 3 votes to advance to the next round.

Yellow and Green Bracket judges: Chris Phipson, Matt David, Mr. Xenomurphy

Red and Blue Bracket judges: Mark Kelso, Dave Kaleta, El Barto

Alright, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Good luck to everyone!

Yellow Bracket

Stormbringer vs Nick Nitro Brick in:
Musical Instrument - Band, orchestra or other, build a real musical instrument at a scale larger than minifigure.

DeTomaso Pantera vs Nick Barrett in:
It Came from Outer Space - The aliens have landed on Earth! Are they friendly, or are they here to harvest us? What happens next is up to you!

Thoy Bradley vs Chris Roach in:
Chess Set - This one’s pretty self explanatory. Create a board and two sets of pieces.

Connor Simpson vs Jens Ådne Rydland in:
Collectible Minifigure Mecha - Choose any one of the released collectible minifigures and build a mecha that they might pilot (it is not necessary to actually own the specific minifigure, but it would help with the presentation).

Luke Chapman vs John 55555 in:
Shrink It: Take something huge, and make it in microscale. Looking for creative ways to capture the details of the large MOC and translate them into microscale. Can be one of your own MOCs microsized, an official LEGO set, or another person’s MOC (as long as you properly credit the creator by linking to their creation and mentioning them in the commentary).

Rinse Jan vs Andrew Somers
Claes Oldenburg - The Swedish born, American educated sculptor is best know for his large scale replicas of everyday objects. Choose your own everyday object and recreate it at a scale large than reality out of Lego.

Infomaniac vs George G. in:
A House Made of... - Build a minifigure scale house, just make sure a strong wind won’t blow it over. Play features will do well here.

Roger Brickjet vs Shannon Ocean in:
Sherwood Forest - What happens in the forest, stays in the forest... What did Robin and his band of merry men get up to in between adventures?

Green Bracket

Dave Sterling vs Deus Otiosus in:
Homophones
What happens when a construction worker confuses the words “raise” and “raze”? How is a “navel” armada different from a “naval” armada? In this category we’re after humorous builds that make use of a homonym (a pair of words that sound alike, but have different meanings). A quick Google search or a glance through a grade-school grammar guide is all the inspiration you should need. It’s up to you to decide what homonym you’d like to use and how you’d like to incorporate it into your build. Laughter is the number one priority!

Zack Milenius vs LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist in:
Uncommon Sense – Spider- man can walk on walls, Superman flies (amongst other things), but what about some of the other less well known “super” heroes?Your challenge is to build a MOC making use of a “super”heroes most unusual ability.

Jason Corlett vs Yuri Fassio in:
Status Quo: Most of the things we build around here are out of this world, fantasy, sci fi, fun stuff and so on. But how about how the other half lives? Pick something from the mundane normalcy of life and give us your take on it. Office drones in a cubicle? Mowing the lawn? Family reunion? What bores the (bleep) out of you?

Sean Blaney vs Mihai Marius Mihu in:
Two Colors only: It doesn’t have to be black and white. Any two colors you like go in this vig, model or dio. But just these two. Aside from color, there’s no limit to what you can build here. Good luck!

Stuart Delahay vs Caleb Z in:
Futuristic Room: What does a typical bathroom look like in the 22nd century? What about a study, when there are no real books in existence anymore? Or a kitchen for robots? Look far into the future and tell us what “normal” city/suburban life will look like. Minimum is a single room max is whatever you can think of (but remember, a REALLY nicely done single room will do better than a “not quite as good” full house).

David Lee vs Glory Forever in:
Sign of the Zodiac: Choose one of the 12 signs and present it in a cool scene. For example, when building Cancer, don’t just put a LEGO crab on a plate, but create a small crab mech or hard suit.

Antonio Silva vs Dylan Mievis in:
Monster Swimsuit Calendar: Build 1 page of a typical swimsuit calendar, only with a hideous/funny creature.

LWC Guy vs Marty Ford in:
Grandpa’s Ghost Stories: What kind of monsters are hiding in your imagination after grandpa tells you one of his stories? Create a scene, creature or other visual representation of those images in your head.

Red Bracket

Gabriel Thomson vs T.K. in:
8 bit Computer Game Scene: Build a scene from an old 8 bit computer game (those were the ones in 2D, look it up if you’re not sure). But don’t do it as a mosaic, build it in 3D as a little dio or vig.

Ryan Degener vs Chas Irish
Dirigible - An airship that is lighter than air and stays aloft due to an envelope of gas which is less dense than the surrounding atmosphere. Examples include balloons, blimps, and zeppelins.

Legolord vs Ralf Bauder in:
Stonepunk: What if cavemen somehow got their hands on futuristic technology? And understood how to use it, but only their way? Robots created from stone and wood, spaceships powered by dinosaurs in wheels … Let your imagination go wild. MM(This one’s brilliant!)

Ru Corder vs Grant W. in:
Cube-dude Superhero: With all the new superhero movies coming up (Batman, Avengers, Spider-Man, …) grab your bricks and build us a cool cube-dude version of your favourite super hero (doesn’t have to be DC or Marvel only, Dark Horse, Image, … is also okay). MM

The Legohaulic vs Donovan Mitchell in:
Mardi Gras Float/Krewe - What’s your version of a float that could be seen travelling through a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans?

Mark E. vs Caleb S. in:
Future Transportation - How will humans travel 100+ years from now? We’re not talking about space fighters and attack cruisers. We’re talking about public and civilian transportation here.

Leda Kat vs Dennis Price in:
In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream - What horrors lay in the deepest reaches of outer space? The creepier the better on this one.

Mortal Swordsman vs Owen S.
Fathoms Below - What’s going on in the dark recesses of the ocean? Bart

Blue Bracket

Blake Baer vs Josh B. in:
The MOC with No Name - In the spirit of the Spaghetti Western film genre, build a scene or story inspired by the time period of the late 19th century in the American West. DK

Wes Pitter vs Isaiah S. in:
A day at the park? - Build us a playground... but not your typical playground. Show us what your warped, twisted mind can come up with. Is there a spike pit below your slide? Or crocodiles under the swing set? The more demented the better!

Dave Shaddix vs The Fisherman in:
You and what army?: Build a small army (more like strike force size) complete with infantry, hardsuits, vehicles and maybe even a small mech or two. You don’t have to show them in a base or on assignment but the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it.

Dan Church vs John Moffatt in:
28. Hyborian Age: Build us a nice little scene from the Hyborian Age of Conan fame. MrX http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyborian_Age

Riccardo Zangelmi vs Annie Corder in:
Utopian Mircoscale - Build an ideal community or society in a scale smaller than minifigure

Cody G. vs Magma! in:
Dystopian Mircoscale - Build a community or society gone terribly wrong in a scale smaller than minifigure. MrX MM

Giovanni Seynhaeve vs A Monkey in:
You Must Be This Tall... - Build your own version of an amusement park or carnival ride that the masses would line up for in droves.

Alex Fojtik vs Tyler Halliwell in:
Surrealism - Create a Lego work in the style of the surrealist movement that features some element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions or non sequitur.

Not an antonym.

Antonyms are words that are oppposites.

You have: Homonyms. Those are words that sound the same but really aren't.

What idiot's idea was it to give Shannon Ocean that category?

Wish I was still in it, these look fun.

I know that was meant in jest but I'll give you a real answer.

The categories and brackets were all set up before round one was over. Then, with the seeding, the players were placed in order in the brackets. basically, we had no control over who got what category as they were determined in a specific order before the players were chosen.

Hope that made sense... cause it only kinda did to me. ;)

The category mentions 'Band or Orchestra', but what that means is the kind of instrument. Electric guitar (band) or Violin (orchestra) for example, get it? Must be larger than minifig scale. But if you build a set of drums, I'm sure we'd all love to see the video!

Ok, what am I missing here? I can only find one related MOC... I knew I was in trouble when I saw Mr Ocean's name but now I'm really worried!

I seem to be missing the same thing you are mate! How is Sherwood Forest a given for me? I have, like, ONE forestman-kinda hard to create Robin's merry band with one minifig, lol. If only I could've had Leda and Dennis's category...SPACE!!

So let's see: 9 days until the deadline, that gives me 8.5 days to think of what to make and half a day to build. Sweet!

Actually, the original title was "Homonyms and Homophones," which would indicate that I don't really care if the words share the same spelling or not, but I figured one trip through the dictionary is all I could manage from the kiddies. :-P

This gives me an idea for the MOC, just have to find one antonym (that isn't written in the first post of this thread) in english.

I would be happy, if I got that category. And there is no need to tell everyone about our bets and stuff. I though we were friends?

Okay, here's a summary of all these homos you're talking about.

HOMONYMS are words that sound alike but have different meanings. Homophones are a type of homonym that also sound alike and have different meanings, but have different spellings.

HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. Heteronyms are a type of homograph that are also spelled the same and have different meanings, but sound different.

WORDS THAT BOTH SOUND THE SAME AND ARE SPELLED THE SAME are both homonyms (same sound) and homographs (same spelling). Example: lie (untruth) and lie (prone); fair (county fair), fair (reasonable).

Well, I could possibly make the whole "coaster." (A roller coaster is the only thing that might fit with my idea) but my concern is that it will be a very small one. I'd much rather do a portion of what is seemingly is a much larger coaster. I think I'll make an attempt at a whole coaster, just don't expect much.

Despite the fact that I've got absolutly no clou of what I should build for our catogorie, I've got some questions: does the everyday object has to be larger that in realtime-reality or has it to be larger than it should be in LEGO-reality? and is it allowed to build something around the object, like a road or something...or do you have to make an object only?

Despite the fact that I've got absolutly no clou of what I should build for our catogorie, I've got some questions: does the everyday object has to be larger that in realtime-reality or has it to be larger than it should be in LEGO-reality? and is it allowed to build something around the object, like a road or something...or do you have to make an object only?

Bit of a personal question don'tcha think?

I mean, he's going to post it later and all.
(what? like you weren't all thinking it too.)

Anyway, at least your build is done for this round and the wrist will heal up nicely before the next round starts should you go on.

Good luck!

I read you assignment/ I think you should create a large version of a normal object, but in Lego. My idea is, that a large scale Lego also is in that definition (like a 1m83 lego minifigure?). What's to say about the surroundings : nothing is said, everything is possible. If any doubts, please ask the judges, it is only my understanding of the assignment...

You fell off a house roof and ONLY sprained your wrist?! Personally, I'd say that's pretty lucky :)

I fell into a forward roll luckily enough buy my hand got hurt when I hit the ground. my advice, don't EVER play nerf-war, on a roof, when its dark outside. and stay away from anything that can hurt you arms or hands, the curse of the MOColympics is merciless.

Yes, Nitro was just asking for it there. Still, Stormbringer was comfortable with saying that his looked wicked after being only half-finished, so that may be a perfectly normal question for him.

Perhaps I should qualify, that this is only my viewpoint. I don't judge all these things with equal importance, however I do take them all into consideration. The first thing I'm going to look at is the build, and everything else is the "frosting".

I will try to do my best on spelling and grammar on my entry description but English is not my native language and I find it sometimes difficult to use the right words, I hope you can understand my situation, thank you.

We do actually. That's one thing that I have never, nor will ever hold against someone. If English is your second (or third or whatever) language and you took the time to learn it well enough to communicate with us then you deserve to be commended.

When we talk about taking all that into account we're talking about "cloneie speak," also known as "the ones that don't care enough to take their time."

English as a second language? Simple answer, no, it won't be held against you in ANY way. Good luck!

Well played DK, well played. The feelings are still mixed however, though this does touch on an old peeve of mine with this game ...a total void of well established judging standards.

Don't get me wrong, its all fine (more or less), but why not spell everything out and bring everything above board?

Good point. I would say the main reason for this is that we want this to be A. fun, and B. a learning experience. This really shouldn't be about trying to be the best or winning Tower Bridge. In my opinion, the point of this should be to improve existing skills and challenge yourself to try new things. Now, for seven diverse individuals to come to a consensus on this is very difficult (as you well know). I feel that asking the seven of us to come to universal standards is not feasible. However, many of the judges have made their criterion public. In the end, these later rounds are much more subjective (which do you like better?), so the criterion can almost be thrown out the window. I hope you understand my position. Anyone should feel free to ask follow up questions.

Actually, I realize that I have not yet made public my official scoring method. I find it difficult to describe in great detail the process I use to rate a creation without reverting to sarcastic humor since the goal of the competition is lighthearted sport. But, I can give it a go. Here's how I work, to the best of my knowledge:

I open up a creation. My interest level in the MOC is at its highest level during those first critical seconds. That's when I search for an overall "wow" factor that, in my opinion, is the goal of almost any art. Not meaning to get all mimsy on you here, but I think the idea of ANY art (a song, a painting, an architectural element) is to convey a feeling, or a thought. If I feel something, I already have high hopes. Next, I check to make sure it fits the category. Nothing too scientific here, really. We included category descriptions for a reason. If the builder followed the directions, great! If not, well... we'll see. I'm not much of a technical stickler, so if the builder makes a clear effort to stay within a Quidditch pitch of the category and has good reason for straying, I say more power to 'em! In fact, it may end up adding to that overall "feeling" I was talking about if the unique element derived from straying from the straight and narrow topic guidelines results in a one-of-a-kind aspect that we all, let's face it, love to see. Am I right? And this leads into phase three: the "is it special" phase. I like to see new things. I don't log onto MOCPages, or view blogs, or cruise the information superhighway at all for that matter just to see re-runs. I think many, if not all, share that outlook.

Time for a midpoint recap. Step one: "wow" factor. Do I feel something? Yes? Great! No? Well, moving on. Step two: category appropriateness. Are we within a Bludger's throw of the main idea of the specified category? Of course not. The Bludger is never thrown. But if we're within a Quaffle's throw of the category's main specified idea, then we're golden. But we're not the snitch. One might refer to this step as the qualifying step. Step three: is it special? Am I viewing something new, or is this just another showing of "The One With Monica's Boots". An important disclaimer to this step is that it has to be new AND decent. You can't put a tire on top of a lamp post and say "this is a new method for building a tree, give me points." Unless, of course you can prove that a tree with such a resemblance actually exists. All sources must be cited MLA. No Wikipedia.

Right, half-time's over.

Now I begin a thorough technical evaluation of the builder’s execution of the MOC--the builder’s “skill” so to speak. Through algorithms explicitly proven by factual historical data, the builder receives a raw score in each of fourteen mutually exclusive categories. Those raw scores are compiled from each builder throughout the entire competition, with special care given to retain the exclusive properties of each evaluation. Once gathered, the scores are plotted and through general statistical elements form a standard distribution in an x-y plane. Once plotted, a standard deviation can be calculated for each exclusive raw score and for each competitor, enabling a direct comparison of any one builder’s raw score, and by extension, their skill level, to those of their peers. Then, I take all of these results and shove them in the trash can, because it’s a LEGO competition designed for fun, lighthearted sport.

I look for certain quality indicators like proper use of color, clean lines, correct proportions, and inventive use of parts to gauge the builder’s execution. All in all, the first one to find the Lewis Carroll reference in this absolutely ridiculous post wins the entire competition.

There. Done. And without a lick of sarcasm.

PS: A certain portion of this is actually true. To find out which parts are true, we first need to plot the post on an x-y plane…

Whew! Quite the in-depth answer there, Matty. Anyway, I would like to expand a little on the issue of the categories. It all can't be "Wow Us With Your Effluvial Renderings in Lego." It's not always about the builders' idiosyncrasies, it's also about the audience. There are many people of various ages following this contest around the world. A diversity of categories, some artistic, some conventional, are necessary to keep things interesting and relevant. Coming up with subject matter that ties in with the available Lego Themes makes a lot of sense. What's poplar and accessible is important. So, if someone is bummed about drawing a category that doesn't live up to their expectations, fine. But just remember, it's not ALL about you.
