Hi, welcome to the MocOlymipics questions thread. The organizers of this competition are very happy to see so much interest in these games. We hope they will be a fun experience that allows us to all become better builders and learn from each other. If you have any relevant questions about the games, please, ask them here. Cheers!

John,

I can see a few of your pics now but the rest are still in that "broken" phase. We actually pushed the games back a couple weeks to compensate for this. Hopefully, there will be enough time for the problem to resolve itself before the games start. I did say that we will not hold individuals responsible for MOCpages problems and I mean that. If your account is still not back up to full steam by the time the games start let us know and we'll come up with a solution. You will NOT be penalized for something that's not your fault.

Well, good news! You're SUPPOSED to be in the dark! The specific rules and guidelines regarding actual entries will vary from category to category and from round to round. You won't know what you're supposed to be building until each category is announced, and you'll be informed of any specific rules that your entry must conform to at that time. Get ready to think on the fly! All you need to know for now is that digital renderings are NOT allowed. Photo editing and clone bricks ARE allowed but in MODERATION. That clear it up?

This exact scenario happened to me last year, and yes, as Gio points out, I had to post to advance.

The REALLY annoying thing was that my opponent (who shall remain nameless unless you're bothered enough to go check out my R2 entry last year)waited until the last day before announcing that he wouldn't be entering a build, so I had already put the time into it when, as was pointed out to me, I could have posted a fig on a plate and progressed.

Ho hum, life goes on. Do not count on drop outs (although I have NO doubts there will be some), just assume your opponent will bring it to the best of their abilities.

Or what's worse, not even tell your opponent you're dropping out, and simply not post anything, leaving everyone to wonder. Not like anyone did that last year...

That's assuming there ARE any "easy" ones of course...

There's a list of 8 categories for the prelim round and I can tell you that they're pretty much all the same difficulty level. Everyone will be able to choose from any of those 8 as their opening category. There will be full rules on what to do when we post them on the 4th.

Last year it was a random draw, this year we're doing it a little different. It'll be "seeding" like in the NCAA. Basically, the highest scoring player of round one will be paired against the lowest scoring player. Then the second highest score against the second lowest and so on.

"But Chris, what about ties?"
That's what the 7th judge is for. In the case of ties, Stacy will be called in to score the tied mocs and that will determine their placement.

I really like this, it certainly encourages best efforts in the first round to determine a favourable seeding in the second, and not doing just enough to scrape through.

Yes, but not to the MOC Olympics Group, and it will render anything you post null and void for the competition. I see no reason for you not to post other builds during the contest, either, if you have the time, just not on the MO Group page. But again, none of it will count for the contest, so you may want to concentrate your efforts on the competition. Good luck!

That would be a big no no. It's basically the same as plagiarism. We all see things on MOC Pages that we copy from time to time, but we must give credit where it's due. But since this is a competition, it'll need to be all original work, per round. In other words, you can't even copy your OWN work. Yeah, it's a tough contest, Dude! But that's why it's so AWESOME!

Relax, Chief, it's cool. Most of us learned techniques from building the official Lego sets. So there's a certain amount of consistency across the hobby. What we're after is that people don't copy a major component of their entry from somebody else, or recycle a previous creation. I hope that makes it clear enough.

What Bart is trying to say is that you cannot use your own or other peoples "full concepts" in this contest.

There's just about no "new" way to put bricks together so we're not talking about that. What we're really talking about is basically full on copying of other's (or your own) creations. (we had an instance a couple years ago where one kid copied another moccers very well known post pretty much brick for brick as best he could and then tried to tell us it was an original idea... didn't fly well.)

And to specify for the above question, ALL BUILDS MUST BE NEW FOR EACH ROUND.

Gee, I hope that made it clear enough?

Let me put this in the simplist terms possible. When you get your category, start building from brick one. No, you can't use your speeder, no you can't use your tank, no you can't use your space fighter, no you can't use your minifig scale house with two car detached garage. All builds start from brick ONE when the round begins.

Joe,

First I hope everyone in your area (and the entire coast for that matter) is safe and gets through this storm with minimal upheaval.

As for how this will effect the games? I'm sorry but I wouldn't be able to hold up the games for just a couple of players without power at the start of the games.

I will say however that the likelyhood of the power still being out by the END of the first round is highly unlikely so don't worry too much. There will still be plenty of time to build and post should you be without power for a few days. We'll take "act of god" on a case by case basis. (heck, the servers are IN New York City... there might not BE a MOCpages if things go sour here)

And remember guys, it's ONLY Lego. If you miss it... meh, at least you and your family are safe which is the important thing.

Don't worry about the MocOlympics, it's small fries compared to what's going on out there in the real world.

:o
I bet you don't get a lot of those questions :p
Anyway,
what are the rules on stop-motions, lego video's
I assumed it is allowed but I'd feel better when confirmed.

Since we judges decided that the photoshop work should be reduced to a minimum and since we don't want any additional music, you can be sure that the rules according to videos are the same.
Just concentrate on building a cool MOC and non of the above is needed anyway.

Are Bricklink orders allowed this year? I haven't competed the last years and only saw this group a few weeks ago, so I went to the 2009 Mocolympics page and found out there can't be any Bricklink orders! What about us, whose collections are very small? Please consider, PLEASE, or I have no chance of winning at all over TFOLs with larger collections and more piece variety.

Well this is more like a statement or something I need to say just to let you guys know, well Hurricane Irene is coming to my home town of Vestal, NY and it might knock out my internet or power so I may not be able to post but it should be back up before this starts. It should make landfall to us by tomorrow and this is just a heads up.
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention my dad works at the National Weather Service and he says we probably won't be with power for a short while so again, that's my heads up.

I'm about an hour or two's drive from Vestal, in Ithaca, and my power has been down for most of the day due to fallen trees, but it's back up now–at least where I am–and even if your power isn't up now, there's enough time before September 4th that it should be back up before the olympics begin.

I see a stopmotion/video as something extra, to show the creation better, for example if I would have "transformer" as category I might make a stop-motion of my autobot transforming.
It would never be the main thing in my entry.

Okay, just to repeat what Chris already said in this thread:
"And to specify for the above question, ALL BUILDS MUST BE NEW FOR EACH ROUND.
Gee, I hope that made it clear enough?
Let me put this in the simplist terms possible. When you get your category, start building from brick one. No, you can't use your speeder, no you can't use your tank, no you can't use your space fighter, no you can't use your minifig scale house with two car detached garage. All builds start from brick ONE when the round begins."

Everything in the contest is supposed to be a new build of your own original work. Recycling, borrowing, and copying are not allowed. We're going on the honor system here, gang, but the judges are always watching. So have fun, and play nice!

I have a question related to this. The lego Tepee (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=x172px1) pretty much only has ONE way of building this - the way LEGO did it. I have YET to see it utilized another way. As far as I'm concerned, this question applys to ALL cloth tents and such. Would we be allowed (if a tepee or tent were part of our MOC) to build it the way LEGO did?

The TFOL that comes the furthest (because one of the TFOL will be in top 4 and in top 8 all others AFOL, there will be 8 TFOLs waiting to see how the judges dig out of the pickle they made. And then, instead of making mini-contest for them and rewarding talent and effort, they're going to give the prize to alphabeticaly first. Wich reminds me, I'm changing my name to AAA-Deus Otiosus...) gets the prize. With that I mean, the TFOL that comes to the highest numbered round wins, except if he's in top 4. Same goes for YFOLs, except one will come to round 3 or 4 (LWC Guy) and will be the last remaining YFOL.

Sail. Skirt for a japanese mecha. Wings for an Indian mythical bird. Rug. Display basse for western themed creation. If sufficiently covered, painting. Cape for a mecha.

EVERY piece can be used in at least a few ways, none just for one.

And what judges would say: copying official, or even unofficial techniques is allowed. Why should we prohibit usage of 1x1round+2x1 round tower technique just because someone posted that technique before you started posting your creations?
Comparison:
Poetry competition. In ancient days a man invented rhyme. You can't copy him now.

What copying means: stealing a general design and idea from another MOC you don't own.

Like making a SHIP like this:

You don't have an opponent for round 1, it's an elimination free-for-all where only the top 64 scores will go on to the knock out rounds.

Links: It'll all be in the post when we post the categories but the short answer is for round one it'll link back to the group home page and for rounds after that it'll be to your opponents page.

As for the effects. I gotta agree that that is a REALLY cool effect. However, just to be on the safe side I'd say to stay away from "special effects" of any kind. If you must use effects of some kind keep them "Brickeffects" (hey, did I just coin a new term?).

Use your building skills to advance, not your photography skills (but remember that presentation is still a big part of it so watch out for blurry pics!).

Yes, pick ONE. What you build may fall into multiple categories, but you have to choose one that fits best. You may recall a contest back in the spring, Yuri's 4X4X4 contest, that's not what we're looking for. One build, one category.

And so you can see who you'll be up against down the road. It's being discussed.

Nope, you didn't read that. IF there's a problem we'll figure something out but you won't be emailing pics to the judges. As of right now, MOCpages is running at about 90%. If there's an issue, we'll deal with it as it comes. Till then, just do your thing like normal. Now get to buildin'!

Just make sure it's different enough from the original that we can tell you didn't just recycle it and you'll be good... a different color wouldn't hurt either, then we'd know for sure.

As a snooty purist judge, I would say any modification is allowed. It may just add a little sour to the soup. Depending on the severity of your non-purist transgressions, you may not even lose any points in my book. Now, mind you, if the build involves spray paint and 2x4's and PVC pipe, that's a different story. Cutting flex though, is something I wouldn't even consider to be non-purist as many official LEGO sets have you slicing tubes and hoses as pat of the building process.

When building Technic models that feature pneumatic functions, you're often given a large spool of 4mm pressure hose and instructed to cut pieces of varying length throughout the process (with the aid of a handy printed ruler!). Some newer models, like the 8110 Unimog that I've just finished, come with the hose sections pre-cut.

Actually, we as judges do not explicitly count presentation in our scores. We're here for the LEGO. That said, a poor presentation may have a negative impact on a build's score if the presentation is so bad that it actually interferes with how we interpret the build. Think of it this way: Say you're a brilliant mathematician who's just discovered a genius new theorem. But when you present it to the university, you write it on the back of a used napkin with a crayon. The brilliance of your discovery may be lost. So when it comes to your creation, try to take clear pictures with a clean background and put a bit of effort into the write-up (for grammar's sake) and you'll be just fine.

Just to specify; I have a brick link order coming for my entry, and I'm not sure I'll have much time to add the parts to my entry before the 14th. Can I post the entry first with the necessary stuff (Link, category) so that the date on the MOC will be on the 13th, then immediately afterwards add commentary under the pictures?

I would assume that even if you joined after the first round had begun that you could still participate, if at a disadvantage due to decreased building time. It's after, when the cuts for the 64 who will go on have been made, that it would be impossible to participate.

Again, anyone joining late will be allowed in as long as they sign up and post an entry for round one.

In fact there may be ties from 1st place to 64th. And they all matter because of the Bracket System that will be employed to determine the rest of the tournament. It may take some time for us to figure out, but we'll do our best! Feel free to start sucking up to the judges, I'm sure it will help!

In fact there may be ties from 1st place to 64th. And they all matter because of the Bracket System that will be employed to determine the rest of the tournament. It may take some time for us to figure out, but we'll do our best! Feel free to start sucking up to the judges, I'm sure it will help!

I take back everything I said about you in the smack-talk thread. Your BSG storyline is the greatest creation to grace the pages. Will you take the number of likes or comments into account when deciding a tie?

This is actually a valid point. Will likes/comments have any bearing on scores?

Also, one other question: in the elimination rounds after round two, will lowest scoring to highest scoring pairing mechanics still be used, or will it be random? Also, if said mechanics are used, will it be based on the number of votes from the judges?

Likes & comments will have no baring on scores.

Once the top 64 players are seeded, the bracket will remain throughout the remaining 6 rounds. You will know who you need to beat to advance and become the champion.

If you can copy and paste the HTML you're using, then it would help to make sure you're not messing up anywhere with that.

Here's what the code should look like:

That's a big secret that only the judges know... muhahaha!

Seriously though, you guys probably won't be getting your scores until either next weekend or early next week.

There's a LOT of behind the scenes stuff that goes on between scoring, (figuring out the tie situation with Stacy), then placing everyone in the brackets for round 2 and so on. We want everything DONE before we put it all out there.

Your final score WILL be posted on your moc by one of the judges once everything is sorted out. You all just have to be patient in the mean time.

The judges scored on a ten point system. Each moc could be awarded up to 10 points by each judge.

The scores, like ANY form of "judging art" are subject to each judges preference. There were some outside things that heavily influenced the scores as well such as links not working, staying "in category" (however much we had to stretch for it) and in one case, someone entering multiple mocs and then removing them from the group (that person scored a 0). You'd be surprised though how close the judges were on just about every moc. I don't think there was a single entry where there was a point spread of more than 2 points or so.

To explain what each judge had to work with, numbers wise...

A score of:

0-2 = Thank you for entering.
3-4 = Not bad.
5-6 = Good entry. You took some time putting this together and it shows.
7-8 = Wow, this is looking really good!
9-10 = HOLY MARY MOTHER! THAT'S AWESOME!

Hope that helps a bit.

THe highest score possible was a total of 60 (tens from each judge) (which no one received) . I only gave out one ten in the entire round.

Wow thanks! That definitely covers what I wanted to know! My link doesn't work for some reason, but I think it has something to do with the system crash, because I did all I could think of to try and figure out the problem. My page has several other weird issues as well.

I honestly think the category of Earth fit the build well. Was it is stretch? sure but not out in left field.

I definitely have a better feel for what the judges are looking for if I decide to try next year. I was trying to have the MOC speak for itself rather then include a detailed write up to explain it or include fancy lighting.

Art is very subjective and the job of a judge has got to be hard. If everyone was a winner it wouldn't mean anything.

Yeah, you kinda read it wrong, but in your defense he kinda wrote it quick too.

What he meant was, we're working on the seeding of the brackets for round two. Once that's figured out, then you'll be able to track who "would" go against who (depending on who wins) through to the end.

As for the seeding and who's going against whom... you'll just have to wait and see. ;)

Luke Chapman vs John 55555 in:
Shrink It: Take something huge, and make it in microscale. Looking for creative ways to capture the details of the large MOC and translate them into microscale. Can be one of your own MOCs microsized, an official LEGO set, or another person’s MOC (as long as you properly credit the creator by linking to their creation and mentioning them in the commentary).

It's not really explicitly stated whether the huge thing we're making in microscale has to be a scaled down version of either one of our own MOCs, an official LEGO set or another person's MOC. I'm guessing that is the case, though, rather than just a generic microscale category.

Also is this the place for questions of this nature, or is it better to ask them in the category and match-up thread?

Thanks :)

Actually, you can make it from either an official set, or from a previously posted moc from yourself or another builder (if it's from another builder please give proper links and credit).

SOrry, not understanding the question here. You mean like a full size TV and since most were black (or shades of grey) you think we'll mark you down because you use red? If what I just wrote fits the description then no, you wouldn't be marked down.

Just make sure it stays in category:

Gabriel Thomson vs T.K. in:
8 bit Computer Game Scene: Build a scene from an old 8 bit computer game (those were the ones in 2D, look it up if you’re not sure).
But don’t do it as a mosaic, build it in 3D as a little dio or vig.

Hi, 2 questions:
1. I would like to edit my R2 creation with the link to my competitor's creation (Owen S). When I originally posted my entry Owen had not completed his, so I linked to his homepage instead of his creation. If I understand correctly this is possible without being disqualified?
2. I would also like to add one line of text to my description. My Moc includes a poem which I wrote myself, however I did not make that clear in the description. It is an integral part of the moc. Is it possible I could make this minor edit? I will not change any of the pictures.
I will await your response before I do anything.
Thanks for your time.

1: Yes, you may change the link to go to his entry instead of his homepage. This is a personal choice that anyone can make in the future. That, however, is the ONLY change that may be made.

2: Thank you for being honest and asking. We would prefer it however if you did not change that. (once the round is over and judgment has been made then it's yours to do with as you will). My suggestion is that you can add the information in a comment if you would like. Also, it's written here that you wrote the poem so most likely the other judges will read it here and know the information.

Thanks again and good luck!

Yuri, this is a SWEET build! I thought it was hilarious too! Anyone who's ever moved will completely understand. All that being said, I think Jason hit the category description a bit better. We were looking for "what bores you" and as much as moving would bore a giant mechanical ape, we were looking for "non sci-fi stuff" here. The other judges may see it differently so good luck! ~ Chris.

Wait what? I read the category carefully and I found no hint of "non sci-fi". In fact, it was clearly the opposite.

Pick something from the mundane normalcy of life and give us your take on it. Office drones in a cubicle?

I don't know where you come from, but here drones are sci-fi (or at least sci, if emplyed in a common fashion) stuff. You also said to give "our take" on it, requesting a personal point of view to people who you know build things

out of this world, fantasy, sci fi, fun stuff and so on.

So where does your "no sci-fi" take come from? It really sounded like you wanted to see some fantastic element thrown into a mundane situation, specifically something boring/bothersome/annoying. If it wasn't then the description was highly misleading.
So I'm asking if your vote was based on the theme interpretation.

I titled mine "opponent" vs. "me" will I lose points for that? And could I change it, if necessary, for the judges comprehension of who built what?

I don't mean to change the subject, but I thought I'd bring something to the attention of the judges, unless of course it already has been brought up. I know I am no longer a part of the Olympics, but I still like to use the Neatchat provided. However, recently there has been a very inappropriate user on the chat. I believe he goes by the name of @n@lsaurus (with the @ signs as a's) and I was just wondering if an administrator could possibly look in to some of the history to see who I am talking about. His language doesn't bother ME in particular, but I know there are other, younger 'regulars' on the chat that could be/are offended by the language. I thought I'd just let you know if you haven't already, as the Neatchat is currently unsupervised, which has led to this problem. Thanks, and good luck to everyone in the Olympics!

Unfortunately Neatchat is not part of mocpages so as much as I'd like to, there's really nothing we can do. If you can find out who this individual is then maybe we can have a chat with him. Of course, this IS the internet and if he's not on mocpages, then there's really nothing we can say about it.

I wish there was something we could do but I'm sorry, it's out of our jurisdiction so to speak.

Okay, I understand. I think there is a 'key' picture on the Neatchat titled 'Administrator Options' that could possibly allow you to control more settings in the chat, but I'm not sure. Other than that though, I'll make sure to let you know if I find out more information about the person. It's not really a big deal though, and I completely understand what you mean. Thanks anyways though, I appreciate it.

I'm having trouble uploading my pictures. I keep getting this message:

It also says the files may be corrupt, and to make sure I'm using jpegs. I'm going to keep working on it, but...got any ideas?

Wes thats tough mate. What you could do is upload at least a couple pics from tiny pic. http://tinypic.com/
I'm sure the judges will take into account that you are having some MOCpage trouble. While you won't be able to make a main picture, you can still add pictures which if anything else will help you if you can't get it to work. Best of luck.

Again, you coud just use the above link to get the pics in place. You won't be able to get the main pic but at least you have some pics. Hope that helps.

Hey guys.
I just had my entry all typed up and ready, and then I clicked finish and the page timed out and deleted everything. Without me saving anything. And no, I'm not blonde.
Anyways, I'm typing it all up again now, but since it's past the dead line...

Looks like i'm out of the comp :/

I would upload it anyway and add it to group. at worst the judges will say your DQed for adding to group late, at best they will be lenient and understand your reasons. Both of these options are better than you sitting there waiting for a reply. I think Batman is on atm and may have left the pool open for a bit.

The group pool was still open, so I wnt ahead and added it. We'll see what happens next!

Hi there!

I want to know if I can add an embed video to my entry. I already had the video but I was waiting for it to become available on Vimeo. ( I had to wait three hours for it to become available)

This is my entry wich I posted some hours ago (http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/293442). In this entry I already had the link to the video but didn't had the embed video... Can I added it, please?

That happens to me a lot. I just make sure I log into mocpages again before I add the creation. I operate on tabs so I have about 20 different internet pages loaded at once. It makes it easier to just leave the draft, go back to your main page, hit add a creation, and then log in from there. This has saved me a ton of trouble, but not a few experiences like yours.
For what its worth though, I would let you stay.

Hi! I have a question concerning Annie.
If it wasn't for uploader issues, we would have had her entry up a good three hours earlier.
But because of them, we were forced to be working on it in the last five minutes, thus making the fatal error of accidentally eraising everything without saving it.

So, even though posting it late came from a MOCpages issue (And it seems to me others have been having the same problem) will she still be "technically DQ'd" as Chris put it?

Thanks guys!

Honestly, I voted before I read this thread.

Annie is forgiven her lateness as we stated before that NO ONE will be held accountable for MOCpages not working properly.

Now, my vote still stands for Gio of course BUT, her entry is LEGAL. Other judges, please vote accordingly.

Just to be fair to all the other players (past and present) please wait until after the judging is complete to add the video. I see you added a link in a comment (totally fine) so that should work for the time being. We just gotta play fair ya know? Thanks!

Sure I was joking. But it is right that I love Poe's work and especially 'The Raven'. The story about a poor, lonesome man, who has lost his beloved wife too early and, as a result, slowly slips into madness, always fascinated me. He desperately wants to hear something about Lenore's wellbeing in the afterlife and is confident that the raven possesses these informations. But since the raven says nothing else but 'nevermore', the protagonist finally loses his mind. Or was the raven in fact a demon ...?

Mark still needs to do the tie break on Leda's and Tyler's builds. Where is Mr. Kelso...

Mr. Kelso is actually unavailable this week so we'll be bringing in a special guest judge to decide the final two matches.

Lee Jones will be casting the final vote for Leda vs Legohaulic and Wes vs Fisherman.

He's in the ER right now, no doubt removing a badger from someone's lower orafice... but as soon as he's done with that, he'll be over to cast final judgement and we'll be able to get round 5 out to you guys in time!

Thanks for your patience.

Well... it's not REALLY needed but...

I can see you're up for it. All it would really be for would be bragging rights and maybe the winner could be the one to choose which of the two semi final prizes he gets?

I'll tell you what, I'll leave it up to Gio. If he want's to go head to head with you for the right to choose out of the two prizes, then we'll make it happen. If not, then I'll just decide at shipping time who gets which (I'd pack em up so I'm not sure which is which then just write addresses on them and hope for the best)

No offense George & Chris, but this contest has been good like it was. I'm happy and thankfull for kicking it to round 6 but with three kids, family chores and a full time job it has been very time consuming as well.

So, if you don't mind, I'd like to lay low on the brick for a while just to keep the peace around here.

George, I'm giving my prize to my son Lennaert because he let me use his bricks (most of mine are in an art project wich I will post soon) and he has his eye on the Tie Fighter.
Could you live with that?
