A good chunk of my bricks are still sitting in Chris' garage, so this should be fun. Speaking of which, I need to get that figured out before Phipson sorts my bricks into his collection "accidentally".

In all seriousness, though, I am jokingly kidding about being overly harsh, though I'm completely serious. Just kidding. As Dennis Price isn't on the committee, I'm hereby appointing myself grammar cop.

Just kidding.

Or am I?

Who knows? Use the word "metaphor" when you actually used a simile and find out. Here's a hint: you lose!

Just kidding, and I'm serious this time.

Seriously though, polished write-ups will likely go a long way with all of our distinguished judges. Just as a hint.

Now just hold on a minute there, Sonny Jim. You have just as much of a chance to win as anybody else. Giving up before it starts is no way to approach this experience. Whatever happens, build what you're happy with and make it the best that you can and you're a winner even if the judges say someone else "won."

Ok, positive reinforcement time is over. Get ready to build!

Tyler, I would love to think it was an intricate series of smokescreens and defence tactics to lull opponents into a false sense of security.

In reality, it seems that the whole self-deprecating, "I'm going to lose", "i'm decidedly average", "Me spel badd" thing is contagious and we should all be taking proper measures to avoid contamination. I recommend face masks, gloves and disinfecting your bricks at the first signs of trouble and, if all else fails, the cleansing powers of fire.

Seriously guys (and I hope girls too) go at this contest to the best of your abilities, take time, make a real effort with your construction, your photography, your presentation, your text (pre-writing everything in a word document then pasting it into your creation really helps with those spelling worries)and be proud of what you create. I certainly didn't think I would get as far as I did last year, but I didn't advertise that fact.

Great sentiments, Stu! This is a contest in creativity, not who has the most bricks. It's a blank slate for everybody. But, don't apologize for sloppy work, and don't rush. Just do it right the first time! Take sharp photographs, write clearly, pay attention to details. Punctuation, spelling; it all counts. Do your best, and have fun!

It's not really necessary to create those divisions. The first round should just pan out that way on its own. We ought to see a good mix of age groups in the 64 who make it through, and beyond. Don't underestimate the talent of the under 18 crowd, especially when it comes to thinking outside the box.

No, despite best efforts at bribery (by me), nobody outside the judges knows the category titles yet. I've been waiting for them and even started a build to fill the time because my sorting was mostly done.

Based on last year, they are impossible to practice for as well. The qualifying round had some really odd categories - mine was 'Your pants are on fire!'.

So, how is everybody preparing? Sorting is useful and as mentioned above i'm doing some small builds for fun, but are you practicing? Do you think leaving the bricks alone for a week before this contest is a good idea? Perhaps so, because if you progress all the way to the final you could be at this until December.... Anybody gathering inspiration or frantically Brick-linking parts they want?

It all depends on the category. Some categories have size restrictions, some don't. You'll just have to wait and see what we throw at you...

I think that next year there should be a limit to how many bricks you use so people like me with only a decent amount of legos aren't matched up with people who have like multiple rooms filled with legos. Or maybe you should just make sure the people you match up aren't peoole who have little legos vs. People with like 5 zillion legos. ( though you might already do that )

There was a category last year where you could only use 10 pieces to make a moc. Other than that I don't see the judges restricting our "endless supply" of Lego's.

I don't know about you but I definitely don't have an endless supply of legos. Only 10 bricks must have been interesting. I take back what I said about a brick limit, it is a stupid idea and it wouldn't be very fun at all.

Guys, the point of the MocOlympics is facing opponents who are all at various stages throughout the hobby. The upset when a smaller builder takes down a giant is when the contest is exciting. If we were matched with others who have the same size collection as we do it would just be like facing yourself each round. There would be no challenge.

What's to stop me posting a picture of a few buckets of bricks, them pulling bits from my collection as I need them? Inventory our whole collection? Impractical.

As has been said before, this is a contest run by fans, for fans, with fans organising and providing prizes and free time. It takes a lot of time and effort to run this thing and the additional effort to check out every entrant's collection then match people up by collection size would be huge AND still wouldn't level the playing field.

Collection size is no guaranty of building skill, creativity or imagination, it just means money spent or time in the hobby. Yes, it certainly gives those lucky enough to have lots of bricks a very valuable resource to call on for the contest, but the challenge is to do the best you can with what you have. I have a nice collection (about 25000 parts) but nowhere near some of the TFOLs and AFOLs who have been at this for years, and I got to the final last year.

Don't be put off by some of the competitors collections or reputations, just do your very best each chance you get.

I suddenly feel very stupid for complaining. I was wrong to complain about the rules and I was most likely doubting my skills at building, but now I see that having more pieces wouldn't make me a better builder at all.

Sigh, there's so much talk but so few builds at this stage,
maybe there should be some kind of "intimidation" round,
a round that isn't judged, just something while waiting for the first round
and the category would be intimidating
like showing off a huge amount of same parts you happen to have or a surrealistic building technique
or simply some smack mocs, smacking other members not only through words right ?

You don't actually need to have an official "intimidation round"
just start building, DO SOMETHING
I don't like to read when there's no mocs as illustration
:P

Maybe people here don't really like criticism, but I couldn't see it, because I do? On the other hand, maybe "mor onic" was meant as criticism.

There's a difference between being a constructive critic whose input is helpful and appreciated and being a critical jackhole whose snide comments do nothing but get under people's skin. Perhaps when you learn just where that line is people will give you the respect you obviously think you deserve.

Wait! No! it's still a single data point that shifts for different values of x, yielding varying single results y, and can therefore be plotted in an x-y plane!

x^3 will always yield one and only one result y for all x. A plottable point.

Anyone got the super nice looking sorting "briefcase" (w. removable semi-clear plastic "trays") from Raaco (from Denmark no less)? Anyone got that sweet smell of benzaldehyde?

I'm so dizzy right now I don't even know what I'm building...

Got another box a few days ago but had to return it...can't stand the fumes anymore. It has gotten to the point where I'm scared to buy new storage boxes :)

Maybe if I clear coat the trays it will keep the smell inside?

Apparently at my job one of the workers dropped out of work without warning or notice (Seriously? In this economy?)

Because of this my boss was keen enough to let me work his shift until they find a new guy.

So unfortunately it's up to me to work his double shift, for the entire week (But hey, at least I'll get that extra pay).

The bottom line is that I really don't know what's going to happen, or if I'll have enough time to finish my entry on time.

However, I would recommend reading through at least the rules forum, and browsing through all the entries from this year's amazing builders. It really has been a great year. Then, practice, practice, practice and get ready to enter next year's contest of epic skillz! If you can't wait an entire year, don't forget that the MOCathalon is just around the corner, so you can check that out when it gets going and maybe join a team. And whatever you do, enjoy! :D

Short answer: yes.

Long answer (for anyone new who is curious about how this whole thing works):
