Best sets of the decade
Join to comment
Since the decade will be coming to a close next year, I thought it would be interesting if everyone discussed what they think are the best sets of the decade. I don't own too much LEGO, but one of my favourite sets that I own is Set #5541-1, the blue Hot Rod. I think that set makes very good use of LEGO pieces. The 'Ultimate Collectors Edition Imperial Star Destroyer' and the 'Ultimate Collectors Edition Millennium Falcon' were great too.

I very rarely buy actual sets anymore, instead opting to buy pieces I want directly (hooray for Lego Factory and Bricklink!) or get bulk Lego from thrift stores, yard sales, or EBay.

I have noticed, though, that the last few years have shown a marked improvement across the board on Lego's official sets. Just the difference in the more recent Star Wars models from the first few that came out are a good example. The Market Street and new town stuff, new Castle sets (Dwarves and Orcs = awesome!), the Indiana Jones and Batman lines, and even the Spongebob sets have all been pretty cool looking. My biggest let down would have to be the Avatar line, I think - having got hooked on the show watching it with my daughter, I would have liked those sets to be better looking, but over all Lego has done a good job in the last 3 years or so. And if the early 2009 catalog is any indication, I might just need to start getting sets more often!

I think the First few BIONICLE sets were amazing, I really loved the cog-wheels in them that made their arms move about

Has anyone noticed that certain lego's that have been carried on for a while like BIONICLE and others have started to deteriorate in means of lego pieces? All the new ones i get now have very few GOOD lego pieces, Does anyone know what i am saying?

I know exactly what you're saying. In fact, I couldn't agree more. Old LEGO sets (by old I mean around from 5-10 years ago) were very good.

As far as Bionicle goes, the bohrok was by far the coolest, in my opinion. They looked alien, and their function was awesome. They could also transform into a ball, and they actually went inside their containers.

Nowadays, the Bionicle sets re-use the single piece torso too much.

As far as system sets go, my personal favorite would have to be the small excavator set from the city construction sets. It's been around for a while now, and has outlived themes and other sets. Something must be right about it.

When it comes to technic, the excavator is flawless. The introduction of power functions greatly improves playability with the set.
