so what about judges?

Erm well I don't jusge by commenting or giving stars or points out of 100 or anything... especially not before the end having seen all the entries together as a whole.

What I've done for the first two, was wait until the contest was over, and all entries in, look at each one in turn, then at all of them together, then, well, just decide what I think are the best built, most suitable, most accurate models. I keep the judgement fair by not letting who the builder is, or what the car the model is of (with the exception of it being disqualified it it's from the wrong time period), affect the decision.

Sorry, I didn't have time to compete in the last contest. However, I'll promise to make an entry to this contest because I love cars from this time period, and I've seen a lot of them where I live lately.

Haha hey don't worry, it's a public contest, not invitation-only :)
I just invited all those that were from the previous two contests, I'm sure I'll have missed out a fair few of the car people without thinking of it, you're very welcome to participate, and you're welcome to invite people you think may be interested, too - the contest is open to all :)

No need to be sorry :)
The contests are all completely optional, you don't have to take part if you don't have time, or if the theme of one doesn't appeal to you; anybody who wants to take part is welcome to. I'll look forward to your entry(ies) !

Yeees! I've been waiting for this one (as I'm sure a lot of people have - it'll be a tough contest I reckon).

All but one of my MOCs fit into this timeframe - and my new one (not yet posted) is made for this contest - now how do I pick which of previous MOCs to post as the second entry??

Thanks Dan, most of these contests are heroic failures, yours are actually meaningful : )

This is definately my favorite era for cars! So much choice!!! I think I have a pretty good idea of what Im going to enter and I made it a while ago (VW Microbus, the ultimate 60s car/van!)

How many entries are allowed by the way is it two?

Aaah that's good... we're getting a fair bit of variety already :)
Yes, you're allowed two entries. You can't claim two places in the results, so whichever of your two entires I consider to be the best will count in the judging.

Thank you :)
I wasn't sure whether the contests would sink or swim... I think the first two were fairly small, possibly due to people not being so interested in the themes. Hopefully the current, and next few will be more appealing and get some more interest.
I think the other thing is finding the people who are interested in participating in contests... not all will take part, but the more get invited, the more will be aware and possibly enter.

Anyway, good luck - looking forward to seeing what you're making for this :)
No rush though, there's a good two months before it's over so plenty of time for people to prepare and build their entries.

Also, my second entry was going to be a racing car (they are allowed aren't they?) and started racing in 1967, but my model was racing in 1972. Is that OK?
If not it really doesnt matter because i will put my Mercedes 300 sl as my second entry, which does fit in the timeframe...

Sure, racing cars are allowed. Any car within the timeframe. They still made the old VW beetle in 2003 in south america but that doesn't mean it's not allowed to enter :)
Likewise, if your car raced in 1972, but built in 1967 then it's the year it was first built that counts.
Not that a 300SL Merc wouldn't get any attention on here :)

P.S If these contests continue to be sucessful could we have a round-up at the end of the year, where the top three from each competition go into an 'overall top 3 of 2011' contest? Might be a cool way to wrap-up all the separate contests this year.

Hmm that's an interesting idea actually - especiazlly considering I wasn't sure what kibnd of themes to do for next year's stuff.

How exactly do you mean? Just a general judgement of the best three, of all the winning entries in the 6 competitions of the year, I suppose ?

That's what I was thinking, as you've already got all the rounds to compile the best 18(?) cars of 2011 sorted. Getting in the overall top three for the year would be a great award

It's completely up to you if you participate, you're welcome to take part, but there's no hard feeling if you choose not to.
And yes, throughout the year, the contests are going forward in time - there will be for present day cars near the end of the year.

Hey,
The only rule I'm going to be strict about is the time period the car is from. One rule does state that is must be a real car, though of course you can make a hot rod *of* a real car. The only thing I ask is that since the contest is for classics from the 50s and 60s, you try to make your hot rod look like it was hot rod from back then; as opposed to a modern-day hot rod, for which the styles have changed a bit over the years.
But yes: bottom line, hot rods will be accepted. I may have sounded like I had a little bias against them in the group description, but that was only because I had a bit of a feeling we'd end up with a contest full of hot rods and muscle cars, and nothing else... though so far it looks like we're getting a nice variety of cars from different countries :)

OK, sounds good. I guess that wouldn't exactly be much of a contest, more of a trying to get the winning people's entries all together on one page within a few days.

Only problem I can think of, which isn't even much of a problem - is in the final top three, do I judge just by the models, or be fair and not let one builder claim two prizes ?

The easy way around that is, if I were to think one person's models good enough to claim two places; just show two different sets of results.

- Dan

P.S. If the contests work fairly well this year, I'll probably continue them next year. Changing the themes of course. Maybe not timelines, past to present, but say, from certain countries, or certain kinds of body styles/type of cars.

Nope, sorry :)
This contest is really for 50s and 60s cars, (as well as the late 40s cars that looks like early 50s ones).

The next contest of course will be 1970s to... I'm not sure yet; but your 1970 car will be of course allowed in the next one :)

Still, isn't it more fun to make something new? This is one of the more 'free' contests of mine seeing as it covers quite a wide variety of cars - I'm sure you'll be able to find something cool :)

I haven't been to as many car dos since going to university, though I still do from time to time. Last summer there was a nice one in france for interesting cars of all ages and makes - vintage cars, classic ferraris, cobras, microcars, newer things too. The cobras were the most notable, we could hear them roaring down the street a fair bit before we saw them !

Hi,
There's no official time period for the next contest just yet, but since this one ends is '69 you can be sure the next one will cover all of the 70s - I'm just not yet sure how much of the 80s it will cover as well, as there are still three more contests to go this year.

Hi Dan

I just want to check something - the rules say 'car'. Do entries have to be a car? I've added my Rat Rod (with over 22,000 views how could I not!) but the model I've nearly finished for this contest (entry no.2) isn't actually a car.

With such strong competition in this contest I really want to enter it as the Rod probably isn't good enough, but I understand if other vehicle types aren't allowed.

Hi,

Well, it depends what you mean by 'not a car' ... if you mean a flying saucer, then that probably wouldn't be accepted. A motorised tricycle was added, and won one of three placers, in the first contest, so there is some room for exception. If it's a small van, or three-wheeler then I'll let that pass; it it's a motorbike or big truck... well... I'm not sure, you could add it and we'll see :)

Part of the reason for this being that future contests after this year may be based on building different types of vehicle etc.

Hahaha well hey if it's any consolation my voting is completely objective - I'm not giving away the places to people who have been friendly towards me or anything - or if so, it's not for that reason.

There's actually been some much more impressive competition this time around - hopefully that means that my contests are starting to catch on.
Judging this one isn't going to be easy, and hard to narrow down to only three... so I may give places to the five best this time around :)

... and of course, generally, the more effort gets put in, the more likely you'll have a chance to win...

Three more contests to go this year... still in chronological order, going slowly forwards in time... next year I may do things by country or style of car instead to give things a change.

Hey,
No problem at all - it's a car from 1965 so it's allowed. Good luck ! As I have explained in my new conversation topic, the judging will happen a little late on this one, as I felt it was the best compromise to give people more time, due to all this muddle with date changes :s
