Ladies and gentlemen of MOCpages. Its that time of year again where we choose the best of the best, the crme de la crme, The top cheeses that are MOCpages MOCie awards winners!

RULE NUMBER ONE

No, you can NOT submit your own moc for consideration. ALL nominations MUST come from other builders. But well get to the nominees in a bit. First things first, the categories.

There will be the old standbys that have been used for the past couple of years for categories, and Ive amended the list a bit. Im looking for what I missed. In this thread, tell me what categories you think should be included that I didnt include.

The categories so far:

Moccer of the year

MOC of the year

Best Sci-fi MOC (this includes star wars, HALO and just about any other sci-fi build you can think of)

Best fantasy MOC (Including Atlantis, castle and anything fantasy related.)

Best new guy (or girl) This is open to moccers who have joined MOCpages AFTER May 2009 and were not eligible for this award in last years awards.

Im keeping the category list short on purpose here. Id like to hear from YOU (yes, you there reading this and picking your nose.) as to what categories YOU would like to see.

Hey new guys, remember, this ISN'T a contest for you to build stuff for NOW, this is an awards show based on your past performance over the last 12 months. Anyone who is a member of mocpages and has posted SOMETHING is ALREADY entered and is eligible to win. It's all about votes... which we'll get to soon enough. Don't go jumping the gun.

For a rundown of how this awards show has been handled in the past, check out this link

There are plenty of good ideas being added and some that are just silly. Try to imagine the MOCies as a real award ceremony like the Oscars, etc. They don't have catagories for Best Barrel in the Background or Most Funny Moment Three Moments Into the Film. The awards should be a little more general. Some of these ultra-specific catagories are never going to fly.

Totally agreed!

Think more along the lines of last years awards everyone. Things like Mech, town and Microscale.

One of my new ideas is:

"Thinking outside the brick"
Using Lego to create something in real life. Life sized objects that people actually use and that sort of thing. Generally building things that most people don't build with Lego. A couple of great examples of this would be Dave Sterling's Nintendo or that table top soccer game from the MocAthalon (was that 2x4? *Kicks self for not recalling*)

Keep those ideas coming everyone!

Think broader categories here guys.

Ahh, I did some checking and I found what you mean.

Allow me to explain for the others here.

The first year I did the MOCies, I did it for fun and there wasn't a whole lot of planning or prep that went in to it. Heck, only 30 or so people voted and the categories were all just chosen by me. Like I said, it was all done on a lark. One of the categories was short story and Shannon Ocean and I had done a group project that won. I made a joke about creating the category so I'd have a chance of winning something.

That's what Eggy was talking about.

For the record, after the first one, which was done in fun, it became a serious thing and we've been taking it seriously ever since.

And Eggy, don't forget, you won for castle the first year too! HAHAHA

Alrighty then...So, here's what we currently have based upon Chris' initial comment in the group, and I'm going to add a description with each. Sound off if you feel the definition of the category needs tweaking. I have a question or two myself...

MOCcer of the Year - Subdivided into three awards: AFOL (18 and over), TFOL (13 - 18), YFOL (12 and under) - Question: Is this the right age division for each? While I'm not unfamiliar with the acronyms, I want to be sure of what defines them precisely, and that we're all on the same page.

MOC of the Year - Simply the finest creation MOCpages has seen during the last 12 months

Sci-Fi - Space (that's a given). Do we include Horror? Apoc? And do we include themed sci-fi creations such as Halo, Star Wars, Aliens, etc? Or should we call it Space?

Fantasy - Castle to be sure. Pirates. Atlantis. How do we define the line between fantasy and sci-fi? Should Horror be in this category instead?

Best new MOCpages builder - Guy or Gal, the new kid on the block who brought us the most Lego joy this time around.

As for additional categories, these might be worth considering...

Gut-Buster Award - The funniest post we've seen this year (MOC and/or commentary)

Transportationator - The builder who brought us the best non-space mode for taking a trip, including cars, trucks, trains, boats, Segways, and hallucinogens.

Vignette - Best vig. We'd have to consider the size parameters here. Personally, I'd roll with 16 x 16 base with no height or overhang limitations. (had my fill of that in the MOCathalon! ;-)

Archi-town-ture - The best creation for the subject of buildings, street scenes etc., NOT including microscale.

Micro MOC - The finest microscale work, including ships, cities, or anything else done in microscale format.

Once Upon a MOC - The best story telling, including, but not limited to comics. Can be one episode or a slew, but has to be story-oriented.

Ronnie James Dio - Best diorama.

MOCellaneous - Anything noteworthy that doesn't seem to fit in any of the above categories.

Some of these categories I've selected because they're big on MOCpages...for example the Once Upon a MOC award. We do a lot of story-telling around here. Since this is MOCpages awards, I feel like it's good to orientate awards towards what we see a lot of on MOCpages itself (vs what might be emphasized elsewhere in the community). However, I've also considered the fact that we're always trying to maintain and grow MOCpages reputation within the larger community. With that in mind, I recommended a few categories that emphasize subjects that are bigger within other communities (like Pirates in the Fantasy category, or trains in Transportationator...trains are huge outside of MOCpages). Hopefully, whether we use these categories above, or something else, we can strike a good balance between what's best suited for MOCpages while still giving a nod to the categories the larger community likes to see.

Wow. I think you pretty much covered every conceiveable category here. Your division of the age groups is correct, by the way. I think Sci-Fi should include horror, since most movies that have 1 or both elements is usually lumped under "scifi". As far as separating scifi from fantasy, scifi would be anything "futuristic" while fantasy would be everything else. That's my 2 cents. "Ronnie James DIO" HA!

Well all Lego mocs are technically "sculpture" (that's why I love it!), but, I agree that there should be a best mosaic category. Also, there should be a best theme category, since some builders, like myself, have created their own themes (Chibi anyone?).

I would put horror under fantasy. Sci fi generally means anything spacey and or futuristic, like aliens, robots, time travel and medical experiments gone wrong. Fantasy is everything fantastic with a non scientific element, like the supernatural, creatures, otherworlds etc.

No, I mean alot of scifi involves a horror element, like Alien, Predator, the Thing, etc. But I can see where horror could be separate if you're thinking classic horror like Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. Basically, I disagree, but I can see where horror could be considered separate from scifi.

I see what you mean. In many horror movies the horror is caused by something alien or future thing. But I think as soon soon as it includes such elements it counts as sci-fi. This also requires a story in your MOC, I mean of you build the alien, there is no horror, even if there's some in the movie.

Yes, there is valid arguments for both options and I don't think we'll ever define it solidly. Perhaps this means Horror should be a category of its own. Encompasing both fantasy and scifi elements?

That's an idea. I'm just trying to make it easier so we don't have too many categories:)

Thank you all so much for your input here. The MOCie awards "staff" are going to confer on all of your suggestions and we'll be back with the final category list and FULL descriptions hopefully before the end of the weekend.

Thanks again everyone and please, feel free to keep the conversations going in the general conversations thread and ask your questions in the question thread.

I will ask again that only moderators and admins create new threads.

Thank you! ~ Chris.

Actually, Frankenstein would count as sci-fi as well (the monster was created as a scientific experiment, after all).

Just like Metropolis :) Anyone knows that?

Yes! I've seen a MOC for it, and it could win FIFTY awards.

how would you find an unnoticed builder ?
great idea though

Nominations, I guess.

I'd say any great builder whose most popular MOC is under 30 "I like it's". Besides I think we all could name some unpopular builder who deserves a bit of recognition.

Sci-Fi - Space (that's a given). Do we include Horror? Apoc? And do we include themed sci-fi creations such as Halo, Star Wars, Aliens, etc? Or should we call it Space?

Why don't we call this something like: Off the planet, or anything outer space?

Fantasy - Castle to be sure. Pirates. Atlantis. How do we define the line between fantasy and sci-fi? Should Horror be in this category instead?

You could define this in "based on official Lego Fantasy Themes"

As for additional categories, these might be worth considering...

MOCellaneous - Anything noteworthy that doesn't seem to fit in any of the above categories.

You should try to narrow this down, or still devide into some examples, maybe?

I really believe we should look into a cathegory that brings a discovery to the group, like: "the what-only-three-comments-on-this-fantastic-MOC, cathegory"

And to bring a worst MOC to the group, a scandal is always nice...

Now that you guys know what some of the categories might be (we'll have the official list posted soon), it would be a good time to start thinking about some possible nominations (both people and creations) that you might like to put forth.

would be a good category too,
there have been a lot of creations, with the new lego pirates and all,
and I think they don't always seem to fit under 'castle'

It would be a problem to count the parts, because some of the Mocs are taken down already.

If people get all upset about simple mis-spellings of their country's name, don't you think they would need a little desensitising?

There's a bit too much arrogance and misapplied national pride over that side of the globe.
