I'm gonna say... no, with certain caveats. Let's say there's a "clone wars" category. If someone takes a clone fig, sharpies it up and posts it... refer to the rules under "points" for that.

If someone is using Brickarms or brickforge or something like that, no problem.

Mr. Phipson, I think I know another rule you should add to this group: Have a good attitude, and don't get mad at your team members if they don't score high. Just thought you should state this just in case this happens, which it probably will.

It will no matter what I say. But maybe people will understand the true meaning of this as being a TEAM competition and surprise us all?

Each player can pick and choose which category they want to build in. Remember, you can only play each category once, so it'll be good to discuss strategy with your team mates as to who is going to build what. Hope that clears it up for ya. Gotta talk real slow for our senior citizens here... HAHAHAHA

Also the wording in the rules is slightly confusing concerning the categories we build for. When we select a category, will every single team member have to build something for that category? Or will each person select their own categories?

Chris, you may want to clarify that in the rules, because over there it seemed like each player could choose on his own even if the same category was already picked by a teammate.

Yeah, basically what we're looking at here is that each player (not team) chooses the categories that he is going to play in. Each player can only play in each category ONCE...

UNLESS that person makes an entry for EVERY category. So if there are 6 categories (and I'm not saying there are) then that person must make an entry in each of the 6 categories BEFORE he can go back and do his "favorite" again.

If every player on the team wants to play in (category X) for their first choice, then we'll be getting 5 entries in category X from that team.

Hope that clears it up, if not let me know. I'll go back and read the last few questions again to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I asked Chris about that, and his answer seemed to me to be that each player of the team picks what they want to build, but can only build ONCE in a category. If there are ten categories, say, the player can build ten Mocs. For a team that's 50 Mocs. I do doubt there will actually be that many Mocs submitted, because I know there are some I'm not going to be any good at, period. But I'm going all out on the ones I do like to build, as I know everyone else will do.

As for the acquiring of additional pieces during the contest, has that ever been a rule before? If so, it probably will be again.

See Also Chris's answer to Yuri, above.

As they say about assumptions...

I read the rules, and although it does not explicitly state that they must be new mocs, that is the entire point of the contest (any contest really) is to help bring the community together, and to get people building.

What the rules do state clearly is: "You may pick and choose whatever you want from the category list and build an entry for that."

Now it doesn't say "post" from that list, it says "build". Therefore, I feel your assumption is correct - NEW MOCs ONLY.

I will talk to Chris about it, but I feel that re-posting mocs should be grounds for a DQ of that player, as should any plagiarism (not just a technique - I feel they should be open source, but a build).

Agreed and correct! This is a building contest. If you're going to mail it in by posting something that you already built just to get your team extra points then you (as a player) will be DQ'd and your team will be one player down because you decided that actually building something wasn't worth it.

Sorry bout the category question, I actually totally missed it. Here's how that's gonna work...

I'll get a list of X amount of categories together (probably 15 or 20 or so) and send them off to Lee and the rest of the judges. From that list, they will choose about 8 or so for the final list. That way, I won't know which categories are being chosen for the game. But since it's still "my" game, I am allowed a certain bit of "cheatism." Each player can pick and choose which category they want to build in. Remember, you can only play each category once, so it'll be good to discuss strategy with your team mates as to who is going to build what. Hope that clears it up for ya. Gotta talk real slow for our senior citizens here... HAHAHAHA

So essentially, each member builds in only one category?

So, do we have to title are creations "2010 mocathan entry" Or can we use whatever title we want?

If you could at least put Moc Athalon in the title, even at the end in brackets, it would be helpful. IE: The Best Moc Evah (Moc Athalon).

You, as an individual builder, can build in any category you like. You can also build in all of the categories. However, you cannot build a second moc in any one category, until you have built a moc for each of the categories.

For example, let us assume there are three categories: #1, #2, and #3.

You choose to build your first moc for #2. Before you can build in #2 again, you must build a moc for #1 and #3, then you can go back and build a moc for #2.

How many times you cycle through these categories is up to you. It would appear Chris has left that open to the individual builder.

I am going to talk to Chris about it, but I think it should be capped at about two or three cycles - I would hate to see sheer quantity outstripping quality.

Also, regarding posting old mocs... can I use a vehicle posted earlier in a completely new diorama?

In regards to "caps" on number of entries, I don't want to put a number on it myself, however I AM going to leave the final decision on that up to the judges. My opinion on it goes something like this. If someone is just throwing out 4 piece mocs to try to rack up single points for their team, allow me to refer you to part one of the points section of the rules:

Being as there are no “matches” to speak of, your entry will be judged on a 5 point system. Here’s how it works.
1 point: This is basically for just posting… now you have to put SOME effort into the moc. “Clone on a plate” type entries will be laughed at and you will not receive any points.

Basically, anyone who just throws out a pile of "brick" is going to be not only laughed at by the judges, but also will be ticking off their team mates by not putting REAL effort into building points for the team.

Again, the final decision on that is the judges, not mine...

Speaking of which, I still need judges... time to head over to that thread and see if anyone else signed up.

I still haven't figured out why this concept is so hard to grasp and why people feel the need to cheat themselves out of a great competition.

Nothing that you have posted before or that is sitting in your house that you have not yet posted but built can be used for the competition. Period.

I know you're on the honor system for things that are built but not posted, but seriously people... build FOR the contest, that's what it's all about. If you post something from before then really... what's the point?

That's just my opinion on the matter, it takes all the fun out of creation something NEW for the contest. Do your parents encourage you to cheat in other aspects of your life? Think about it...

(and no, I wasn't "coming down on you" specifically here, just in general)

About the rating system, are the judges gonna talk together and decide the final rating for each moc? or does each moc get an individual score from each judge?

I agree. Otherwise, someone could enter 9 Mocs and get 1 each on them, while another builder has two at 4 each. That's an extreme example, I know, but the analogy, I feel, is valid.

I kinda touched on it up above, but I'm not in favor of posting an official "cap" for the simple reason of this. What if someone CAN actually build well AND fast? I'm not the worlds greatest builder by far, but I AM pretty quick when I need to be. (For example Lee, that build you and I were talking about me starting on Mondy... basically done.)

So knowing that my builds aren't going to be "clone on a plate" would it be fair to me to cap my cycles at 2 or 3? (not that I'm going to go through them all, but you see my point.)

Again, the "final" decision will be left to the judges, I'm just throwing in my two cents on what the original spirit of the games was. Build fast, build WELL, win one for the team!
